The most effective philosophies, skills, and practices in leadership have undergone a dramatic transformation. This shift began in the 1980s when traditional authoritative approaches to leadership started to lose their hold. During this pivotal period, Warren Bennis, widely considered the father of modern leadership, published his groundbreaking book, “On Becoming a Leader.” I remember this period vividly, as I was learning about leadership as a newly minted manager in the high technology industry. This book quickly became a trusted, indispensable guide for leaders everywhere. In the book, Bennis critiqued the limits of authoritative leadership, shining a light on how it stifles innovation, holds back development of people, and erodes trust and collaboration. Bennis championed a radically different approach rooted in trust, empathy, empowerment and collaboration. It was an approach that set the groundwork for the leadership practices now valued and embodied by leaders worldwide. For a closer look at how successful organizations are evolving leadership in today’s dynamic landscape, check out McKinsey’s recent article, “The Art of 21st-century Leadership: From Succession Planning to Building a Leadership Factory.” This piece offers a window into the best practices of companies that are thriving by following and building upon the visionary leadership model that Bennis introduced. Have you ever formed a team that seemed perfect on paper, yet didn’t deliver? You selected high performers from diverse backgrounds—different skills, generations and cultures—because we all know diversity drives success. Yet, some members felt disconnected, and the synergy you expected wasn’t there. How can you unlock their full potential as a team? Research suggests that it’s about more than just diversity; it’s about balance. Malcolm Gladwell’s “Law of the Magic Third” points out that to foster real connection and psychological safety, teams need 25-33% of members to share each critical perspective for the project. When team members feel truly understood, they thrive together. Think about this principle in relation to your recent teams. Could this be the missing piece to unleashing their best work? Dive into this article to learn more about how you can apply The Law of the Magic Third to boost your team’s performance. #incmagazine #malcolmgladwell #rosabethkanter #teamperformance #psychologicalsafety #teamcomposition https://lnkd.in/ec9T5bWM

Many of us rely on gut instinct to make decisions about people or groups of people, such as those made related to job interviews, employee promotions, marketing strategies, and product or service design. But what if this leads to making judgements that are tainted with unconscious bias? Gut instinct often stems from unconscious biases shaped by learned beliefs about personal characteristics like race, ethnicity, gender, or age. It's very much like having a built-in, systematic occurrence of discrimination that is very difficult to spot or recognize because we're not aware of it. When bias enters our decision making process, it can cause stereotyping and bad decisions. How can we recognize this in real-time? We can pause for a moment as we make a quick decision, to question ourselves. We can ask, for example, am I deciding this based on actual facts that are before me, or based on assumptions? Is my decision coming from information the individual has provided, or someplace else in my thinking process? If we apply our skill in this type of self-regulation, we can guide ourselves to re-thinking and making a better informed choice. Unconscious bias is a habit, something that occurs automatically, without thinking about it. But, how can we prevent unconscious biases? The article, "Reduce Conflict and Boost Your Leadership, Backed by Neuroscience," provides actionable ideas we can use to change the habit. Read on to uncover ways we can unravel and disconnect the threads that tie unconscious bias to our decision making activities. #incmagazine #gutinstinct #unconsciousbias https://lnkd.in/ehhzrb8k

Trust is a cornerstone of any successful business, yet a significant gap exists between management and their stakeholders—employees and customers. Let's look at 2 examples related to the workforce. 1) A recent study highlights this divide, revealing that while 68% of business executives claim they trust remote and in-person employees equally, 31% of employees feel that in-person workers are more trusted. 2) This perception gap is further emphasized by flexibility in work arrangements. A striking 71% of employees believe that having flexibility in when they work would build trust, yet only 43% of executives report offering such flexibility. This trust gap isn't just about feelings—it's deeply embedded in company procedures and approval requirements, which are powerful indicators of how much trust management places in its workforce. Similarly, company procedures that make transactions difficult for customers due can also send messages of low-trust to customers. The question then arises: how much should companies loosen these procedures to show they trust their employees? What are the implications of stakeholders not feeling trusted by company managers? How might relationships be impacted, and what does this mean for the business? How can managers strike the right balance without compromising the integrity and performance of their organizations? In the article, "Is Your Organization Built On Trust? Is It Really?" published by Chief Executive, author Lior Arussy describes actions leaders can take to adjust procedures to strengthen and demonstrate trust while including enough monitoring to identify and hold accountable abusers. Read on for thought-provoking insights you can consider in relation to your organization. You may decide it's time to open discussions about possible change. #chiefexecutive #trust # https://lnkd.in/eD3VujGp

For years, organizations have turned to cost-cutting as a quick fix to boost their bottom line. But is slashing expenses really a sustainable path to profitability? Often, this approach only provides temporary relief, freeing up capital in the short term, but eventually forcing a return to spending to maintain productivity, quality, and innovation. Today, savvy organizations are shifting their focus towards long-term strategies that enhance overall operational efficiency, allowing them to reallocate resources towards future growth and innovation. Deloitte's insightful article, "Unlocking The Promise Of Cost Optimization," highlights four key strategies that leaders can use to drive long-term success.
