When traveling through a city, people will choose the mode that is reliable, convenient, and comfortable. Street performance is conventionally measured based on how many vehicles can travel through, and how fast they're traveling. But by measuring the number of people moved on a street, we can make a strong case for bike, pedestrian, and transit improvements.

How many times per day are people riding bikes in station-based bike share systems like BIXI-Montréal and Citi Bike? To get an idea, we measured trips taken per available bike per day in bike share systems. Our 2023 Shared Micromobility in the U.S. and Canada report found that Bixi in Montréal, Bike Share Toronto, and Citi Bike in NYC were the busiest bike share systems in North America, with each bike in the systems taken out an average of 6 to 8 times per day. E-bikes were used significantly more than pedal bikes in systems that offer both. Despite seeing more trips per bike per day, e-bikes should not replace all pedal bikes in systems. Ridership remains robust for both options; in hilly Montréal, pedal bike use outpaced e-bike use in nearly every North American system. And with no e-bikes in the system in 2023, the Boston area’s Bluebikes system served more trips per bike per day than almost every other station-based system–even with their e-bikes.

NACTO biked beautiful Philadelphia this week during #ITEPhilly2024! We were excited to celebrate our shared values with traffic engineers and transportation professionals working to create safe, people-centered streets. Highlights: 🚲 Ryan Russo shared a preview of the new Urban Bikeway Design Guide at the #CompleteStreets Council. 💬 We connected with staff from NACTO member cities and agencies. 🤝 We partnered with ITE to lead a conversation about the 11th Edition of the MUTCD. Our coalition achieved some key improvements, and now we’re raising your questions and advocating for state adoption. Next up: the 12th Edition! We're asking for a more inclusive update process and more experimentation. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e_JF6Ahe 💭 We learned a lot from the sessions and conversations. A favorite was the "Race, Transportation, Safety, and the Built Environment" plenary session with great panelists including past NACTO board member Veronica O. Davis, PE! A single federal document dictates what nearly every American street looks like–and federal regulators recently updated it for the first time since 2009. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) governs all road markings, speed limits, stop signs, and traffic signals nationwide. Still, it needs to catch up in a few areas. Trips taken on bike share and scooter share systems in the U.S. and Canada reached an all-time high in 2023, according to a new NACTO analysis. NACTO’s 2023 Shared Micromobility in the U.S. and Canada report found that people took 157 million trips on bike and scooter share in 2023, surpassing the previous peak of 147 million trips in 2019. Yet, despite the incredible popularity of shared bikes and scooters, some bike and scooter share systems folded or otherwise had trouble financing their operations in 2023, and many cities experienced dramatically climbing costs for riders–especially for e-bikes and shared scooters.
