NEW REPORT | The International Forum for Democratic Studies has released a new report by Beth Kerley, Fernanda Campagnucci, and Carl Miller titled “Leveraging AI for Democracy: Civic Innovation on the Digital Playing Field.” The report explores possible paths towards a prodemocratic vision for AI, while considering authoritarian uses of the tool, and highlights the manners in which civil society can proactively engage with digital design. To counter authoritarian uses of AI, making AI work for democracy requires strategic engagement from civil society. When governments make meaningful, open data on topics of popular interest publicly available, it empowers civil society, scholars, and other stakeholders to scrutinize the work of authorities, find solutions, and co-create policies collaboratively. Like social media before them, new AI tools promise to change the game when it comes to civic engagement. These technologies offer bold new possibilities for investigative journalists, anticorruption advocates, and others working with limited resources to advance democratic norms. Yet the transformation wrought by AI advances is far from guaranteed to work in democracy’s favor. A raft of commentators are parsing AI’s threats to democracy. To better the odds for prodemocratic actors in a fluid technological environment, systematic thinking about how to make AI work for democracy is needed. Please join authors Fernanda Campagnucci (University of Münster) and Carl Miller (Demos) to discuss a new report outlining possible paths toward a prodemocratic vision for AI. Christopher Walker (National Endowment for Democracy) will provide opening remarks and Beth Kerley (International Forum for Democratic Studies) will moderate the discussion.

AI is “reducing the cost, time, and effort required by authoritarian actors to both mass-produce and disseminate manipulative content with the aim of smearing opponents and promoting allies, exacerbating divisions in democratic societies.” The International Forum for Democratic Studies report "Manufacturing Deceit: How Generative AI Supercharges Information Manipulation" by Beatriz Saab was quoted by The Washington Post Editorial Board. https://lnkd.in/gbNpuAh6
