  • Did you know that 26% of adults have a disability? This eye-opening statistic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sheds light on the importance of inclusivity in the workplace. However, the 2023 NOD Employment Tracker™ uncovered that companies reported an average self-ID rate of just 4.2%, highlighting a major discrepancy. Because of this discrepancy, many employers underestimate the needs of their employees. Research from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) also shows that employees with disabilities perceive workplace #inclusivity, leadership, safety, and support differently than the average employee, emphasizing the importance of creating accessible and supportive environments. For over 40 years, NOD has been advocating for disability inclusion. This year, NOD introduces the Employee Engagement Survey to help companies assess their disability practices and foster inclusive, safe workplaces to retain top-tier talent. Don't miss the opportunity to participate in the NOD Engagement Survey and help create a more inclusive workplace. Spots are limited, so secure your spot now. • Spotlight on: Ed Roberts A pioneer of the independent living movement, Ed’s leadership helped establish the first Center for Independent Living. He was the first person who used a wheelchair to ever attend the University of CA, Berkeley. Today, he is widely regarded as the “father” of the independent living movement.

  • Today we’re busting the #myth that a disability is a “problem”. “Disability is not a ‘problem’ to be solved or to overcome. It is usually the environment or the people around us that make it a problem through ableism, stigma, and an overall lack of understanding.” –Felicia M. Nurmsen

  • We’re excited to announce the release of our latest resource, a disability-focused Cultural Connections Toolkit, developed in collaboration with Fair360. This resource is designed to help organizations foster a more inclusive workplace by understanding and embracing the diverse experiences of people with disabilities. Disability is a complex and multi-dimensional concept, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It’s more than just a medical condition—it’s about the interaction between individuals, their environments, their history, and how they're perceived. The #ADA explains disability using a three-part definition: 1. A physical or mental condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities, 2. a history or record of such a condition, 3. or being perceived as having a disability, regardless of whether the person has a condition that substantially limits a major life activity. This toolkit includes strategies for making digital environments #accessible, the benefits of inclusive design for all users, and discussion questions to engage employees in fostering a disability-inclusive culture.
