Mid-day Story Time... I was eating a can of Bush's Seasoned Black Beans for lunch, cold—straight out of the can—when I learned about the chance to interview for an Associate Brand Manager role at Bush's. On that cold February day 12 years ago, I told the Recruiter (with crazy faith), "This is my job. It's meant to be!" Fast forward to today and I'm still eating Bush's Beans (yes, sometimes still out of the can), they have kept my family for generations and they continue to keep us. Just this morning, my 10-year-old son took 2 cans of Bush's Baked Beans and 2 cans of Bush's Chili Beans to his 5th grade teacher for her birthday. As proud as I am for him to ask me to buy his teacher some Bush's Beans...I'm humbled. The thought of my little fella making his own memories along with his teacher—who is in her first year—just makes me smile and think back to where my own Bush’s journey started. Whether he remembers this years from now, I doubt my son’s teacher will forget the small navy blue bag filled with Bush's beans that she received. The Midwest Dry Bean Coalition signed onto a letter to the Honourable Justin Trudeau (Prime Minister of Canada) to make sure U.S. agriculture is not caught in the Canadian rail supply chain shutdown.

Bean dreams come true! Last week I had the absolute pleasure of frolicking through bean fields in Minnesota and Wisconsin with Bush Brothers & Company. Kate Rafferty, Leslie Soffa, and I visited colleagues and friends who gave us tours of their processing facilities and showed us around beautiful fields of black beans, navy beans, and red kidney beans. Thank you to everyone who spent time with us, and to Bush for inviting me along on this incredible adventure! A special shout-out to Robert Loggins for all he does for beans. No, I don’t know the secret family recipe. BUT, I have a suspicion. Visiting friends and colleagues at Chippewa Valley Bean was amazing! We saw their facility, kidney beans in the field, and the first deliveries of dark red kidney beans. Kidney beans are known for needing some extra care, and Chippewa Valley Bean is known for their excellent quality thanks to the hard work of their company and a fantastic group of growers. Yesterday, Grand Farm was honored to have US Senator John Hoeven host a US Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee Field Hearing at the Grand Farm Innovation Campus. 🌾 Hoeven, who serves as Ranking Member, hosted Senate Agriculture Committee Members: Office of U.S. Senator John Boozman, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senator Tina Smith, along with U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small and Under Secretary and Chief Scientist Chavonda Jacobs-Young, Ph.D.

Yesterday was a pretty surreal moment as Grand Farm had the opportunity of hosting four U.S. Senators as we hosted an Ag Appropriation Field Hearing. With a room of 250+ people, the ecosystem really showed up as Senators Hoeven, Smith, Klobuchar and Boozman talked about the importance of funding ag research. Here are a few of my takeaways. 1. I had a lot of hope for our political system after seeing these senators working together, solving problems, asking relevant questions and getting along (shocking, I know.) so much of what we see on the media is political theater. They’re real people working on real problems. Agriculture is not a right or left issue. It brings us all together. 2. About 1% of the Farm Bill funding is for ag research. Our producers and ag industry are facing numerous challenges and adequately funding ag research will continue to keep our farmers and the U.S. in a strong position. 3. The USDA has strong leadership with Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small, Under Secretary Chavonda Jacobs-Young, Dr. Simon Liu and all federal and local leaders. 4. We have a hell of a team. The amount of work that went into getting the campus and building ready for this high profile event is incredibly impressive and everybody did it with a smile and lots of laughs Thanks to everybody who made yesterday possible. It was one for the books.
