Perseverance was the underlying theme of the recent #NESHCo24 conference. From the opening keynote by US Olympian Elizabeth Beisel through to the final breakout session, presenters shared stories of staying resilient in the face of challenges and continuing to push for what you believe in. The conference got off to a fantastic start with Elizabeth Beisel as the opening keynote. She is a three-time Olympian and a native of Newport, RI. Beisel shared numerous stories in her keynote, including how she first qualified for the Olympic team by tuning out her inner voice that kept telling her she was too young and inexperienced. She also told the story of how she came to be the first woman to swim the 10.3 miles to Block Island – a feat she accomplished in 2021. Beisel took on this open-water challenge (not her swimming specialty) to honor her father who battled cancer. During her keynote, she recounted the inner dialog she was having with herself to keep swimming despite how cold she was and how slow her progress seemed. Her message – stay focused on your goals and quiet your inner voice when it says you can’t do something. Excellent Breakouts Sondra Brown from MDRG, Inc. presented an excellent session on their latest research into Healthcare Experience (HX Index) Kristen Guillemette Perfetuo, MS from South Shore Health and Jay Dobek from Last Minute Productions shared a ton of practical zero-budget tips on how to create compelling storytelling videos in healthcare. Chris Rakoczy from Hartford HealthCare led an informative session on how to manage the increasing number of visual assets so that you can quickly find what you need for the content you want to create. Bonita Brodt, APR Roland Kielman Elliott Bent and Ryan Mercer from The University of Vermont Health Network presented a moving session on their "End the Silence on Health Care Violence" campaign. The videos and stories they shared were heart-wrenching and stunning. The work they did to ensure these sensitive stories were shared in the proper context was equally impressive. A truly enjoyable and educational session. Lacey Reichwald closed the event with a fun and insightful look at how AI will change the way people search for health information. Her "eat rocks daily" example gave the audience a lot to chew on. Overall, #NESHCo24 was excellent. I can't wait for next year's event.
