Amy Arsenault is a proud living kidney donor (2021) and now uses her race car to promote the #DonateLife message. "I drive a race car at Seekonk Speedway and love to promote donate life and all things organ donation. My childhood friend is now in need of a kidney and I want to keep promoting to try to help find her a donor." Thank you Amy for all you do to promote donation!!

New England Donor Services staff, volunteers and transplant recipients joined City of Springfield, Massachusetts Mayor Domenic Sarno and State Senator Adam Gomez Sr. to raise awareness of the importance of donation and transplant. While organ donation has increased in New England by over 52% since 2020, the need remains great. Highlighted at the event are the donor awareness billboards now on display in the greater Springfield area. Special thanks to WWLP-22News and Western Mass News (Channels 3, 40 and 6) for covering the event.

June 2024 was a record-setting month for organ donation in New England with 64 selfless donors and their families making the decision to save the lives of patients in need of transplant. It was just last May 2023 when the previous highest number of 61 organ donors in a single month was achieved. Our dedicated NEDS staff of nearly 350 donation professionals were onsite at hospitals across New England, to support these donor families and to coordinate the complex process of making donation and transplant happen. We thank the donors and donor families of this past month and every month for making our mission to save and heal lives through donation and transplant a reality. #DonateLife

In May, New England Donor Services was honored to authorize and coordinate the donation of the region’s first ‘partial heart’ for transplant. The generosity of this donor family was life-changing for the organ recipients. In particular, 4-year-old Jack Mangan became the recipient of this partial heart, a life-saving operation designed specifically for children. Jack was born with a congenital heart defect, and by the time he was 10 months old, he had undergone five cardiac operations. NEDS President and CEO, Alex Glazier said, “It solves a problem for pediatric heart patients because current grafts don’t grow with the child, which leads to additional surgeries." (paywalled $)

An OPO’s core mission is to honor organ donors and ensure their decision to give life through donation is fulfilled. NPR’s Morning Edition aired a story today on Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP), a new technique used to improve the condition of the organs they recover for transplant. To date in 2024, NEDS’ use of this NRP technique has resulted in 149 life-saving transplants. NPR Health Correspondent Rob Stein traveled with an OPO and witnessed an organ recovery effort. The piece captures the complexity of the work OPOs perform and the tireless efforts of OPO staff to recover and make available for transplant as many organs as possible under difficult circumstances.
