Couldn’t be more excited to share my — Piercing the Veil to Attorney Well-Being — program with NJWL and Blank Rome 🩵 attorneys next month! Attorneys suffer from work related stress and burn out higher than other professions: ⚖️ We live and breathe in an adversarial system that counts our worth in 6 minute increments. 🥇We are paid to win, but so is our adversary! 🤩 We have tremendous pressure to always look, sound and be perfect. ✍️Our practice is filled with deadlines, that are often out of our control. ⏰ We work long hours, around the clock and must be always available and “on”. 👨⚖️ On top of all of this we have ethical obligations as officers of the court. 💔And so, we often put the duty that we owe to our clients and firms ahead of the duty we owe to ourselves to be healthy and well. In this program I explain the foundations of the attorney well-being movement, discuss ABA and state bar guidelines on the correlation between attorney well-being and attorney competence and offer mindfulness based solutions! I'm honored that the New Jersey Supreme Court recently re-appointed me to serve as Vice Chair of the New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program. I've served with NJLAP for several years, and am proud to be a part of an organzation that does such amazing work to support attorneys and legal professionals with mental health, addiction, and overall wellness. I read a recent article in law dot com where K. Brooke Welch explained: "Silence drives stigma. The legal industry encourages a conspiracy of silence. The professional stakes feel too high. Our hard-earned status often becomes our identity: “I’m an attorney” or “I am a Partner.” But the human and business costs of staying hidden are staggering. The silence and stigma can also undermine sharing the hope of recovery."
