  • Newly released body camera footage out of Springfield, Illinois reveals the brutal murder of Sonya Massey, a 36-year old Black mother of two children who was fatally shot by police in her own home earlier this month. The body camera footage is sickening, painful, and a continued reminder that police officers often inflict harm in the form of fatal and non-fatal violence, on those they are charged with protecting and serving. “The interconnectedness of white supremacy and policing is detrimental to our livelihood(s),” says New Voices Executive Director, Beulah Osueke, “Time and time again, Black people who call the cops seeking help are met with undue suspicion, aggression, and life threatening and/or ending violence. How are we supposed to trust a system that kills us when seeking help? Black women and folks who feel unsafe, in any given situation, shouldn’t live in perpetual fear of our lives being taken from those enlisted to support us.” There is no reform for a system that is working as intended. Sonya Massey was robbed of life, and stripped from her family, friends, and community at the hands of state-sanctioned violence. To read our full statement go to newvoicesrj.org

  • Last month we hosted our 20th Anniversary Cleveland event, ‘Peace, Love, Soulstice.’ Artists showcased their work in a walk-through art gallery, while mural artists created pieces onsite in real time. We also enjoyed live open mic acts as well as a performance from THE legendary Shaw High School marching band. New Voices is committed to helping build a better world. With that in mind, we awarded three “Kin Defender” honorees with $1,000 to support their community-building efforts in and around Cleveland. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating and supporting community-driven artivism!

  • Although Pride Month is over, we're still reflecting on all that pride means to us. A few of our Pittsburgh staff had the opportunity to table at a Pride Month event and asked everyone they spoke to what Pride Month means to them. These are a few of the attendees responses... “Pride month means standing up to the systemic injustice and oppression that has been rampant throughout this country. It means standing proud and fighting for fundamental rights and acceptance.” “Being the person you want to be, without fear or despite it.” “Pride means acceptance, finding community, and remembering the sacrifices of previous generations.” “Being able to be my authentic self with like-minded people.” “A chance for everyone to feel they can be themselves.” “No Violence!” Thank you Vandergrift Pride for having us!

  • A leaked draft decision from The Supreme Court appears to show voting in favor of maintaining EMTALA, the critical right to emergency medical care including abortion. We were prepared for a loss in this case given the court’s previous history, and while this is a welcome surprise, we’re not willing to celebrate the bare minimum. The right to LIFE SAVING abortion care in the event of a medical emergency shouldn’t be a contentious topic. Our human right to live should not be up for debate. Despite this potential respite, we must remain vigilant. We doubt this is the last we’ll hear of abortion access on the national stage or at the state level. Abortion rights remain at risk and under attack by a slew of draconian and controlling legislation. To see what access to abortion in your state looks like, and understand the threats on the horizon, check out Guttmacher Institute's State Legislation Tracker at https://lnkd.in/evHvyQjh.

  • We can’t talk about Pride Month without talking about our environment, especially as we head into one of the worst heat waves on record throughout the country. Global rising temperatures affect us all but they have a profound effect on those experiencing homelessness, including LGBTQ+ youth. According to the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, LGBTQ+ youth are 2.2 times more likely to experience homelessness than straight and/or cis youth and during extreme weather events such as wildfires, heat waves, flooding, and droughts, that number rises. Stay safe this Pride Month and consider donating to the LGBTQ+ youth shelter in your city including: The Attic Youth Center in Philadelphia The Valley Youth House in Philadelphia Proud Haven in Pittsburgh The LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland
