Meet Justin Kosmides and Chris Nolte, the founders of Bloom, an operations-as-a-service marketplace that connects mobility companies with suppliers, manufacturers, and distribution partners. Bloom’s story began at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where Justin was building an e-bike company at Newlab while Chris was leading a bike-centered retail store and community nearby. They bonded over the challenges of entrepreneurship and shared a vision of easing the path to scale for mobility companies in the U.S. Now, they’re helping to shape the future of hardware manufacturing and operations from Detroit — collaborating with Newlab, Michigan Central, Beacon MFG, and hundreds of other service partners to reshore manufacturing for mobility solutions — empowering early stage companies and some of the largest OEMs in the city and beyond. Most recently, MoonBikes has recently teamed up with Bloom to relaunch in the US Market and scale their North American operations from Newlab at Michigan Central. Watch below to learn more!

We're thrilled to join Also Capital, The 81 Collection, and Side Door Ventures in supporting Grounded's $3.5M pre-seed funding round, which will accelerate the production and distribution of their in-demand electric RVs. Led by Sam Shapiro, Grounded was one of the first members at Newlab at Michigan Central, and the team has been hard at work developing standout electric RVs - expanding out of the Newlab prototyping shops to their own factory in the Michigan Central Innovation District. These versatile vans are not only gaining traction for personal adventures but are also in high demand from small businesses needing custom designs for mobile services like medicine, pet grooming, food transport, and more. Most recently, Grounded collaborated with Climate Tech Cocktails and Newlab to create a bespoke RV for Matthew Myers’ “Here We Are” tour across the country. To date, Grounded has already logged double-digit sales of their RVs, generating around $3 million in revenue. Congratulations to the entire Grounded team on this incredible milestone! During Michigan Tech Week, Newlab and Michigan Central teamed up with Union Heritage Ventures to host a dinner for investors, planting the seed for new relationships amongst funders committed to supporting the growth of startups in Michigan. Expanding the Michigan tech startup ecosystem is a top priority for Newlab and Michigan Central, and this dinner was just one of the ways we are fostering a tight knit community of investors, industry partners, and founders from all backgrounds to collectively accelerate a vision for a world class critical-tech ecosystem. Thank you (and congratulations!) to Chef Kate Williams for the exclusive sneak peak ahead of the reopening of the much celebrated Lady of The House in Detroit’s Core City neighborhood.

Newlab at Michigan Central was proud to host "First Responder Day," bringing together the Detroit Fire Department, regional fire departments, first responders, and industry professionals. Led by Ronald Butler of Energy Storage Safety Products International, LLC (ESSPI), the event focused on advancing collaboration and knowledge-sharing in the fields of battery safety, electric vehicles (EVs), and emergency response. The event's key objectives were to foster meaningful dialogue on battery safety, EV incident response, and fire suppression techniques, while providing first responders with hands-on demonstrations of cutting-edge safety technologies. This event reinforces Newlab and Michigan Central’s commitment to prioritizing safety and driving critical technology innovation as we advance new mobility solutions. A special thank you to Detroit Fire Marshal Donald L. Thomas and Chief Robinson for their insightful contributions, as well as ESSPI, J. Waters, HAAS Alert, Turtle Fire Systems and Lifeline for their impressive demonstrations.
