Last Friday, Cristian Oncescu, RA, AIA, Associate at Newman, spoke at the 2024 Yale Alumni Real Estate Association Conference, providing insight into how artificial intelligence can be incorporated into the world of design and construction and how Newman is exploring the use of this quickly evolving technology. He accompanied fellow panelists, Rish Gosine (Managing Director and Head of Alpha Investment Intelligence & Innovation at Pennybacker Capital), Christine Wendell (Co-Founder and CEO at Pronto Housing), and Cherie Santos-Wuest (Managing Partner at Celadon Venture Advisors, LLC).   Christian joined Newman in 2021 and has since made a significant impact with his work on our higher education and commercial projects. He is an integral part of our Design Methods Technologies Knowledge Group, supporting the integration of visualization technology and AI tools into our design processes. Newman continues its transition to a new generation of leadership with the announcement of Principal Peter Newman’s retirement and the promotion of Laura Gilmore, LEED GA, AIA, Director of Design, and Paul Santos, AIA, Director of Housing, to Principal. Marking the sixtieth anniversary of practice at Newman, this next step in the firm’s evolution signals a new chapter in its continued growth and leadership.   The promotion of Laura Gilmore, AIA, LEED GA, and Paul Santos, AIA, to Principal recognizes their accomplishments at the firm and positions them for continued leadership going forward. Our team recently gathered at University of Connecticut to celebrate the opening of Connecticut Hall with the University's leadership, students, and alumni, as well as State Representatives.      Newman served as architect of record in partnership with design-builder KBE Building Corporation for the new seven story, 465,000 square foot residence and dining hall. Designed by Sasaki, the building houses 650 beds in suite-style units for UConn Honors Program students, the Nursing Learning program, and the Wellness Community. Thank you to Eric Gebrian and Jeanine Palmieri of CES Engineering for including my daughter, Maxine Mangs-Hernandez of Solli Engineering and me in their annual charity golf tournament, great fun and some serious daughter/dad time for a great cause.

Summer intern Lauren Sexton dedicated her time at Newman to researching the design of classroom spaces and supporting our Wampanoag Country Club design team.   In her final presentation last month, Lauren explored the profound impact of the built environment of schools on the physical and psychological health of students through a study of neuroscience principles. Her presentation featured a carefully crafted manual, "Cultivating Space", to guide educators in making optimal design choices within classrooms to enhance student development and well-being.   We wish Lauren all the best in her final year of the M. This past spring, we teamed up with Junior Achievement, a national career-education organization, to spend a morning with seventh grade students at New Haven's East Rock Magnet School, sharing information about the profession of architecture.   Designed by Newman and completed in late 2012, the East Rock Magnet School is near and dear to us. The school is located on a sloped site and in a transitional area between industrial, highway and residential zones in New Haven. The new East Rock School, which replaces a former school building on the same site, is designed to accommodate nearly 600 students and serves  as a walkable community center during and after school hours.   It was a true joy to be back at the school, and an even greater honor to use our work as a means of teaching its students about architecture and design.
