Let's face it...friends at work make work feel less like work. (Bonus: mental health benefits!) A whopping 81% of New Narrative staff reported having at least one work friend in our 2023 all-staff survey. Take a moment on #InternationalDayOfFriendship to celebrate that one colleague who always seems to know when you need a surprise coffee treat, or can make you laugh with just one look across the water cooler. Here's to #friendship! Share this post if you have a work bestie, or tag them in the comments so we can celebrate them with you! ➡ Are you wanting to make friends at work and not sure where to start? Here are some ideas: -Ask a colleague about a photo on their desk or art on their wall. -Follow up with a team member after a high-stakes project to see how they're doing. -Check in with your desk mate: can you bounce a few ideas off of them for their feedback? Sometimes all it takes is a small gesture to get the ball rolling! #OfficeFriend #OfficeBestie #FriendsAtWork #NewNarrativePDX

Oregon continues to face significant mental health challenges, according to the latest Mental Health America report. Notably, Oregon ranks: ❗ 51st for overall mental health—indicating a critical need for improved mental health services. ❗ 47th in adult mental health—underscoring the urgent need for accessible support and resources for adults. ❗ 46th in the nation for Adults with Substance Use Disorder in the Past Year, or 22.71% of the population. There is no denying that Oregon behavioral health providers have our work cut out for us in our current state of mental health. Despite these challenges, our agency is committed to the collective effort to improve mental health outcomes through community support, policy changes, and increasing access to mental health services. 🚀 Let’s work together to change these statistics. This morning, Mental Health America released its annual State of Mental Health in America report. Each year, we use federal data to evaluate the mental health of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Our findings in this year’s report are clear: the U.S. is in a mental health crisis. Here’s a snapshot of what we learned: 🔹 23% of adults - nearly 60 million Americans - experienced a mental illness in the past year. 🔹 2022 had the highest number of deaths by suicides ever recorded in the U.S.; 5% of adults and 13% of youth reported having serious thoughts of suicide. 🔹 1 in 4 adults with frequent mental distress could not see a doctor due to cost. 🔹 1 in 5 youth had at least one major depressive episode in the past year; over half (nearly 3 million youth) did not receive treatment. July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month–a time to focus on the unique strengths and challenges that Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) face when it comes to mental health. Bebe Moore Campbell was a journalist, teacher, author, and dedicated mental health advocate for the Black community and other underrepresented groups. National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month was established and named in honor of her work. Mental Health America has created its BIPOC Mental Health Toolkit to help BIPOC communities reduce mental health stigma, facilitate intergenerational conversations, and address mental health myths. Learn more at their website, and use this month to start (or, hopefully, continue) conversations around #BIPOCMentalHealth in the workplace and beyond. The deinstitutionalization of mental health care in our country may have begun as a progressive social movement, but very quickly lost its way. For anyone curious about how we got to this point in our mental health and houselessness crisis, NPR's Up First Podcast recently hosted an episode shedding light on the history of deinstitutionalization for mental health patients in the 1960's and the consequences of a lack of integrative healthcare solutions to replace the role of mental hospitals. There are no easy answers, but affordable community housing access is a BIG missing piece of the puzzle today, one which agencies like ours are working hard to rectify.
