For Mental Health Awareness Week, I chaired a panel event exploring how we can promote mental wellness and psychological security in the workplace. The event, co-hosted by Women in Public Affairs and Blakeney, was a vital discussion with a carefully curated panel of experts - Kai-Nneka Townsend, Gemma Byrne and Kadra Abdinasir - all of whom have dedicated their careers to this subject. While our panel didn’t have all the answers, one thing was clear: there is not enough action around this subject generally. Conversation is important, but action makes the difference. Employers should be more accepting of mental health challenges among employees and authentically communicate that ‘we are listening and figuring it out as we go’. The bleak issue of lack of mental health support from the Government also featured in conversation. Progress often feels slow and setbacks, such as the removal of the Mental Health Act, are frustrating and worrying. These vital conversations need to be escalated and prioritised in the political agenda. Perhaps with a general election now imminent, we could see support step up (please). It’s essential that we continue these conversations and share more and, more importantly, take meaningful action to promote mental wellness in our workplaces. It’s up to us as employers to create environments that prioritize safety and promote well-being.    One tool I’ve found incredibly useful is U.S. Surgeon General’s Framework for Workplace Health and Mental Well-Being, which describes how we can better support employees through five pillars: Protection from Harm, Opportunity for Growth, Connection and Community, Mattering at Work, and Work-Life Harmony.     This framework touches on tangible ideas like promoting adequate rest, establishing flexible schedules, and building a culture of gratitude. Walk the talk As part of the Mental Health Week initiative, HR encouraged all staff in the region (if possible) to take a short walk together with the local team, taking the opportunity to get some fresh air, stretch their legs and briefly discuss how we together contribute to a great working environment Some staff that were not able to walk together with others, found a “Walk the talk partner”, that they called during the walk. The benefits of a “Walk the talk”, are many: 1. An opportunity to get some fresh air, stretch your legs and discuss things in a less formal setting. 2. Easier to engage people in the chat, without the feeling of one-way information classroom style. 3. I´m not sure why, but don´t you agree that we get a bit more creative and collaborative whilst walking? Next to the fruitful discussions, I´m sure that all the “walkers” brought back some extra energy to the workplace.
