About us
For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

We're celebrating our 139th anniversary today. Since the Newport News Shipbuilding's founding in 1886, generations of shipbuilders have come from near and far to contribute to our legacy of “Always Good Ships.” Today, more than 26,000 NNS shipbuilders are proud to support the US Navy, building and overhauling the nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines that protect American freedom and project strength around the world.

We hosted events during all three shifts on Friday to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Thomasina Wright, NNS’ vice president of Fleet Support Programs, was the keynote speaker and encouraged shipbuilders to honor King through actions that reflect our commitment to quality and our company values. “His relentless pursuit of a better tomorrow inspires us to confront the challenges we face today, both in our personal lives and here at Newport News Shipbuilding,” Wright said during her remarks. Take a look at these photos from our celebration.

Attendees at last month’s christening ceremony for Arkansas (SSN 800) heard Newport News shipbuilder Mavis Echols’ stirring rendition of the national anthem. However, they may be surprised to find out she wasn’t the first member of her family to share talent during a milestone event at NNS. Her husband, fellow shipbuilder Charles Echols Jr. performed the national anthem during the keel authentication ceremony for Enterprise (CVN 80) in August 2022. This talented family also shares a deep connection to NNS’ mission. Charles is a United States Air Force veteran, and the Echolses are the parents of three sons who serve in the Air Force, US Navy and US Army. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e7hVMjja
