#OnThisDay 📆: Former President Ronald Reagan was born on Feb. 6, 1911. He served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. USS Ronald Reagan (#CVN76), the ninth ship in the Nimitz class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, was built at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, and named in his honor. Construction started with the ship's keel laying in 1988, and Former First Lady Nancy Reagan, the ship's sponsor, christened the carrier in 2001. Nicknamed "The Gipper," CVN 76 was commissioned at Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Va., in 2003, just 11 months before the former president passed away. Building the namesake of one of America's leaders remains a great honor.

The shipyards may be nearly 1,000 miles apart, but with so many HII-built ships in the fleet, it’s no surprise when they cross paths.🗺️ Check out these stunning photos of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (#CVN70), built by Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, and Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton (#CG59), built by Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Division of HII, sailing in formation in the South China Sea on January 17. Seeing HII-built ships sailing side-by-side as they fulfill their mission of protecting peace and freedom around the world fills us with immense pride and makes the work our shipbuilders do more than worth it. 📸: U.S. Navy / MC1 Allison, MC1 Allison, MC3 Walker #AmericasNavy250

HII-built ships are the result of innovation meeting defense. USS Preble (#DDG88), proudly built by Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Division of HII, recently test-fired new laser capabilities and is the latest step toward moving shipboard lasers into a fully operational state. Preble is the second Ingalls-built ship to test this capability. The future of naval warfare starts with how we build it today, and we're proud to have a team of shipbuilders who work to create a new standard of excellence every day. #OnThisDay 📆 : Sixty-seven years ago, shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, laid the keel for the very first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier - Enterprise (#CVN65) - in history. As the nation's only shipyard capable of building nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, HII is proud to continue the legacy of progress and innovation as we build the next generation of these remarkable vessels that make the US Navy the greatest fleet in the world. #HIIHistory #AmericasNavy250

HII’s Vice President for Mission Technologies, a division of HII, Government/Customer Relations Tom Moore VADM, USN (ret) discusses the US Navy's force structure and shipbuilding strategy and why it has been unable to generate the force structure the U.S. Navy and the nation need in the February issue of the U.S. Naval Institute's Proceeding. Moore argues that an inability to manage both new construction/beginning of life and ship expected service life/end of life have led to an undersized and overstretched fleet. Moore emphasizes the importance of long-term, predictable shipbuilding schedules, service-life extensions for existing ships, and increased investment to address growing security threats, concluding that a larger fleet is both necessary to meet the nation’s needs and achievable with proper planning and commitment. Moore served 39 years in the U.S. Navy. During his last four years, he served as the commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eGv228iy

On January 31, 2019, the Navy awarded a two-ship buy contract for Enterprise (CVN 80) and Doris Miller (CVN 81). This smart procurement strategy saved billions and accelerated key technological advancements for America’s industrial base. Aircraft carriers are indispensable to our national defense. In 2024, an unprecedented 8 of the Navy’s 11 aircraft carriers were forward deployed around the world. We must maintain a steady and strong demand signal to empower the industrial base and construct new carriers. We appreciate that Congress has recognized the importance of the two-ship buy strategy in the new defense bill and applaud the bipartisan effort to strengthen the fragile industrial base.

The world's largest aircraft carrier at work! Built by Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, USS Gerald R. Ford (#CVN78) conducts flight operations in the Atlantic Ocean on January 24. CVN 78, the first in the Ford class, and its sailors are currently on deployment in the Atlantic to further develop core unit capabilities. It truly takes a village to build these "cities at sea" that support thousands of sailors, aircraft and materials for months at a time, and our shipbuilders are more than capable of such a task. As the nation's sole designer and builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, we're honored to employ the tradespeople who are building the next generation of these mighty vessels. 📸: US Navy / MC2 Orlosky
