This week, we joined other hog farmers and pork companies in Washington, DC to share with policymakers why we oppose the highly controversial EATS Act inclusion in the Farm Bill. The EATS Act would roll back California’s Proposition 12, the country’s strongest animal welfare law, and take away economic opportunity for higher-welfare hog farmers. We're particularly grateful to U.S. Representative Jim McGovern (MA-2) and U.S. Representative Jim Costa (CA-21) for meeting with us in person on this important issue. Last week Niman Ranch hog farmer, Drew Kraft, spoke with the South Dakota Bankers Association about young farmers’ need for working relationships and partnerships with local banks. Along with fellow South Dakota farmers and ranchers, he shared his perspective as an generational independent family farmer raising niche livestock. Ultimately, young and beginning farmers need a chance. On behalf of our community, we thank Drew for advocating for his family and fellow farmer and rancher families across the Midwest.
