Niron Magnetics, Inc. is commercializing the world’s first high-performance, low-cost, rare-earth-free permanent magnets with support from ARPA-E's SCALEUP program. Their Clean Earth Magnets, made from abundant iron and nitrogen, significantly reduce environmental impact and dependence on scarce materials, offering a sustainable solution for technologies critical to the U.S. energy transition. ARPA-E Deputy Director for Technology Dr. Daniel Cunningham attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Nion's commercial pilot plant in Minneapolis, Minnesota, seeing firsthand how these powerful magnets are being scaled for commercialization. #ARPAESCALEUP support was a major milestone in Niron’s journey, and it could be in yours too. What an incredible milestone for Niron Magnetics! Earlier this month, our ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening of our first commercial pilot plant and we couldn’t be prouder of what this means for the future of sustainable technology. With leaders from our local Minnesota government, the Department of Energy, our partners and investors, and many others in attendance, we showcased the impact of Niron’s Clean Earth Magnet® technology on reducing reliance on rare earth elements and advancing clean energy solutions. The event featured a special performance of the U.S. National Anthem on the world’s first electric guitar made with Niron’s rare-earth-free magnets, facility tours showcasing our technology and processes, and speeches from some of our special guests. A special thanks to our employees and their hard work, everyone who made this event a success, and to all of our partners who continue to believe in our mission. Check out some images from the event below.

At our recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, we celebrated in a truly unique way—by playing the U.S. National Anthem on the world’s first electric guitar made with Niron Magnetics’ Clean Earth Magnet® technology! This guitar features pickups made with Clean Earth Magnets in our vibrant Niron Green. Crafted without rare earth elements, our magnets not only deliver incredible sound but also support our mission to transform industries like electronics, electric vehicles, and more with sustainable technology. A big shoutout to Matt Kirkwold for the amazing performance, which was a perfect tribute to our commitment to American innovation and manufacturing. We also want to thank MISCO Minneapolis Speaker Company for providing the Little Walter amp featuring their Tone Speak guitar speaker for this performance, Derry O’Byrne for building the guitar body to reflect Niron’s values of sustainability and innovation, and Vig Guitars for the handwound Clean Earth Magnet pickups. Last week, GM Ventures was proud to have our very own Daniel Bouie speak at the grand opening of Niron Magnetics, Inc.'s first-of-its-kind commercial pilot plant for production of rare-earth-free permanent magnets. The Minnesota-based facility has production capacity of more than 5 tons of Clean Earth Magnets and represents an important step in reaching full-scale production. As announced last year, GM and Niron have a strategic partnership agreement to explore the potential use of these magnets in EV motors.
