Gisteren begon mijn korte werkbezoek aan de Verenigde Staten (VS) met een gesprek met de denktanks Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) en Atlantic Council. Zij zijn experts op het gebied van industrieel en innovatiebeleid en net als hen, geloof ik in de kracht van samenwerking. Dat is nu ook meer nodig dan ooit, met de spanningen op het wereldtoneel die impact hebben op economische kansen. Ik wil dat onze overheden innovatie en trans-Atlantische samenwerking stimuleren. Dit was ook het thema tijdens mijn gesprekken met Jovita Neliupšienė, EU-Ambassadeur in de VS, en Robert Lighthizer, voorzitter van de Center for American Trade.
Nederland en de VS hebben al samenwerkingsprojecten lopen, vooral op het gebied van halfgeleiders. In deze sector zijn Nederlandse bedrijven bijvoorbeeld sterk vertegenwoordigd in Arizona en Californië. Ik wil onze economische relatie voortzetten en verdiepen. Daarbij denk ik aan de lucht- en ruimtevaart, innovatieve technologieën als fotonica en quantum en binnen de defensie-industrie.
Tijdens een meeting bij de Heritage Foundation, bespraken Nile Gardiner, Paul Ray, Charles Calomiris en ik de thema’s ondernemerschapsklimaat, regeldruk en vergunningverlening. Hoe is het ondernemerschapsklimaat in de VS vergeleken met Nederland en de EU? Welke instrumenten zet de VS in om dit te verbeteren? Wat is de huidige regeldruk voor bedrijven in de VS en wat is de impact daarvan op het investerings- en ondernemerschapsklimaat? Hoe lopen de procedures in de VS bij vergunningverlening en welke knelpunten horen daarbij? Genoeg input om mee terug te nemen naar Nederland!
Mijn bezoek eindigde met een gesprek met mijn ambtsgenoot Don Graves van het Amerikaanse ministerie van Economische Zaken (U.S. Department of Commerce) Natuurlijk was ook hier trans-Atlantische samenwerking een hoofdthema, ook in relatie tot de aanstaande verkiezingen in de VS. Ik gaf aan onze samenwerkingsagenda op het gebied van halfgeleiders, fotonica en quantum te willen verdiepen. We deelden bovendien de laatste stand van zaken van het huidige en toekomstige beleid vanuit de VS, Nederland en de EU.
Nu terug naar Den Haag voor 2 belangrijke debatten in de Tweede Kamer over ons concurrentievermogen en digitale strategie. Iets wat ik later deze week ook met Europese collegaministers ga bespreken in Brussel en Kopenhagen. Het is immers nodig om het bedrijfsleven te versterken. Nederland moet meer doen met minder mensen. Daarom zijn investeringen in kennis, technologie en innovatie cruciaal en moeten we ondernemers meer waarderen.
