Dark and taboo intrusive thoughts used to make Alegra Kastens, LMFT feel like “the worst person alive.” She feared she would be judged, criticized, or even turned over to the police if she told anyone about them—a feeling familiar to many in the #OCD community. But when Alegra opened up about her suffering and finally got effective treatment from an OCD specialist, she quickly realized her fear was unfounded. She learned that she wasn’t defined by her thoughts and that there were ways to manage them so they didn’t feel all-consuming anymore, which led her to become an OCD specialist herself and help others going through similar struggles. At NOCD, we recognize how these highly stigmatized thoughts can make it difficult to reach out for help. Our therapists are trained to understand even the most shame-ridden themes of OCD, and they know that intrusive thoughts are no indication of who you are or what you’re going to do. No matter how alone, ashamed, or hopeless OCD might make you feel, life can get so much better with the right kind of care. Alegra’s story proves it.
