  • #TechTipTuesday: Maximizing Impact with End-of-Life Equipment Replacement We all know that replacing end-of-life equipment isn't the most glamorous part of IT, but it's one of the most critical. So, let's talk about how we can frame this necessary evil in a way that doesn't put people to sleep—especially the ones holding the purse strings. The Tech Angle: From a tech perspective, swapping out old gear ensures we're not left holding the bag when the vendor stops supporting it. Unsupported equipment can increase our vulnerability to cyber threats by up to 20%, according to industry reports. It’s not just about keeping the lights on; it's about keeping the bad guys out. A real-world example? When we upgraded our VMware environment, we avoided significant outages and set a new standard for system reliability—achieving zero downtime across three clusters. The Dollars and Sense: Now, let's talk dollars. Investing in new equipment might feel like a budget hit, but here’s the flip side—downtime costs an average of $5,600 per minute for most organizations, according to Gartner. So, when we talk to the budget folks, it’s not just about shiny new toys; it’s about ensuring continuous service delivery. A smooth operation means fewer disruptions and better outcomes for Nevadans. And that's something everyone can get behind. To strengthen our case, it’s time we tap into the collective wisdom of our peers in the private and nonprofit sectors. How are you handling end-of-life equipment? What strategies have you found effective in balancing cost with operational integrity? This is a PSA to reach out and bring those insights into our discussions. If you’ve got contacts or experiences worth sharing, now’s the time. So next time you’re in a meeting and the topic of equipment upgrades comes up, don't just talk tech—talk outcomes. Tell the story of reliability, security, and keeping Nevada’s services running without a hitch. After all, nobody wants to explain to the legislature why a system went down because we were clinging to old hardware. Remember, in the OCIO, it’s not just about the technology—it’s about the people who depend on it every day.

State of Nevada CIO @ State of Nevada Office of The Chief Information Officer | IT Governance, Organizational Leadership

This last week I had the opportunity to teach a period of instruction for the Nevada OCIO’s Leadership Academy on the fundamentals of project management and what makes a good project manager. The purpose of this Leadership Academy is, especially in large IT organizations, we often promote (quite deservingly) our best technological individual contributors, but too often leaders will assume that what made them amazing technologists would translate to supervisory or managerial roles. All to often however, we fail these team members by not giving them the tools and training to adapt to the new roles and give them the required toolsets necessary to be proficient. We wanted to change that. For those that know my journey, they know that I have a passion for project management, this is the area where I really felt that I was able to step above and make a significant impact and truly help the teams that I was supporting. This week I got to share that passion with a group of about 30 team members. Of course we covered the fundamentals of the PMBOK, covered the phases, domains, and key deliverables. We talked about tools and techniques. We discussed project scoping, having clear goals, and ‘beginning with the end in mind’. I feel the most impactful portion, was when we had a conversation about the human intelligence and interation components that are required to really take the next step. Understanding motivations, leadership, and communication. Skills that require practice, growth, and often stepping outside of your comfort zone. I know it was a super rewarding class for me to teach, just cracking open the PMBOK again was nice, but seeing folks get it, and hopefully walk away with tools and philosophy that they can use right away will make an immediate impact not only for our organization but for all those that we serve.
