The Truth About Reliability in Extreme Weather—a timely topic of discussion at ACP HQ this morning at our first Power Perspectives Powercast. In opening remarks, ACP CEO Jason Grumet outlined how extreme weather events of recent weeks underscore the challenge the U.S. power grid faces, the urgency of bringing clean energy projects online, and the criticality of maintaining power, even in very challenging conditions. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Commissioner David Rosner joined Grumet in a conversation about the importance of reliability in the energy sector, FERC’s ongoing mission and the need for timely decision-making. Next, ACP Board members Krista Tanner of ITC Holdings Corp. and Stephanie Smith of Eolian and Ed Baine, of Dominion Energy Virginia discussed evolving strategies for the integration of renewable energy, how clean energy technologies contribute to grid reliability, the importance of flexible resources, and the growing need for interregional transmission. Regardless of whatever challenges power companies may face in a given scenario “We have an obligation to keep the lights on for our customers,” Baine told attendees. Today’s final panel featured RTO and ISO leaders Paul Suskie, Southwest Power Pool, Richard Burt, Midwest Reliability Organization, Mark Rothleder, California ISO, Emilie Nelson, NYISO with moderator Carrie Zalewski, ACP. Their focus: clean energy’s reliable performance during recent extreme weather events, collaborative efforts between systems operators and the challenges presented by growing load demand. Thank you to all who joined us in person and virtually. #Powercasts
