Substance abuse was once thought to be a "male issue." Spoiler: It's not. And, it can present differently for women. For example, for drugs such as marijuana, opioids and cocaine, women reach higher levels of substance abuse and addiction severity with smaller amounts and shorter time of use than their male counterparts. In addition, women who drink regularly are more at risk than men for heath problems that include cirrhosis, heart damage, and brain damage. And, to top it off, women are less likely to seek substance use treatment due to stigma and logistical concerns. Join us on Oct. 29 for our event and Let's Talk about Substance Abuse. So excited to have Lauren Grawert, MD, FASAM, an addition psychiatrist and chief medical officer at Aware Recovery Care, Inc., join us for a dialogue moderated by Vasanta Pundarika, a strong advocate for women's health. As always, these events are open to everyone at no cost. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eECkBZ8e #womenshealth #substanceabuse

Last week we joined forces with Natalie Benamou, MBA and HER HEALTHX to talk about women’s heart health. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. We need more conversation — not everyone knows that or what it means for them. This episode combines patient stories and medical expertise. Here are some takeaways: Medical gaslighting can happen. This happens when you aren’t heard or your concerns/symptoms are dismissed. Saraa Basaria encouraged everyone to, “trust your instincts and push for thorough examinations." We also need to take control of our own heath. Patty Jassak, MS, RN, CHCP, FACEhp shared how her brother’s heart condition led to her finding out more about her own heart health. “My brother's experience was a wake-up call for me. It made me realize how crucial it is to be vigilant about our heart health." We can (and should) make changes to how we deliver cardiac care. Simin Gharib Lee shared how Systole Health offers women group visits combined with nutrition and 1:1 breakouts with physicians. She said, “these visits allow for a more interactive and comprehensive approach to care, where patients can ask questions, receive immediate feedback, and gain a deeper understanding of their health conditions.” If you missed it, you can watch the replay here: https://lnkd.in/ems2RGNP #womenshealth

🚨Breaking News 📰 🚨 I recently filmed a special with Good morning America and ABC news with Diane Macedo, a journalist who was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. 📺 The first part aired yesterday morning and last night and is a part of a series that is aimed to empower Girls and Women. 💪🏾👧🏽🙋🏾♀️ Diane like many women had her diagnosis of ADHD missed during childhood. When girls are not accurately diagnosed it prevents them from getting services and academic supports as well as therapies that may help them to stay organized, make less mistakes, and have better emotional regulation. 👧🏽📚 The reason that boys are diagnosed more frequently is because they tend to show more signs of hyperactivity whereas girls tend to show more inattentive behavior and a lack of focus. These quiet signs of ADHD in girls, leads them to being called names like “lazy” or “careless”. 🙇🏽♀️ This may harm a girls self esteem and cause her to overcompensate by masking her symptoms, putting in more effort and burning out. 🎭 This may be why there is a high rate of anxiety and depression in women and girls with adhd.🧠 Awareness is key and understanding how ADHD presents differently across cultures and different populations allows girls and women to stop self blaming and to access the support that they deserve. 🙌🏾 Thank you Diane for sharing your story and thank you Good morning America and ABC news for including me.🎥📹 Diane Macedo Good Morning America ABC News #adhd #neurodivergent #womensmentalhealth

The future of Women’s Health is taking shape. Women’s health isn’t just about reproductive health: it’s about addressing the full spectrum of physical and mental well-being. From bone health to cardiovascular health, women face unique challenges that need more attention and investment. 🦴 Bone Health: 80% of those with osteoporosis are women. ❤️ Cardiovascular Health: Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S. 🦠 Autoimmune Diseases: Women make up 75% of all Americans with autoimmune disorders. 🧠 Brain Health: Nearly two-thirds of those with Alzheimer’s disease are women. Despite these stats, women’s health research is underfunded. Only 10% of NIH research funding is allocated to women’s health, leading to gaps in understanding and treatment. Economic investment in women’s health isn’t just ethical: it’s a smart financial move... closing the women’s health gap could boost the global economy by at least $1 trillion annually by 2040. I'm writing a three-part series on women's health with Priya Bathija @ Nyoo Health. Read part one here 👉 [https://lnkd.in/gET7AhBU] Here's what I'll cover this Sunday: Women’s Health Investment Trends and Future Market Growth :)

"Our system isn't set up for ease of people to get the postpartum care that they need or desire.” Ashley Gresh, The Johns Hopkins University. Postpartum care has traditionally been limited to a physical and mental health checkup at an OB-GYN six weeks after giving birth. The six week mark isn’t scientifically supported, and this one appointment is missed by up to 40% of patients. This means, it’s likely not enough to flag potential long-term risks and complications. Read more from Axios about what is changing and what more can be done to improve access to postpartum care: https://lnkd.in/dFhb_DbU #womenshealth #maternalhealth —— Stats: More than half of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States occur up to one year after birth. Over 80 percent of these deaths are preventable and disproportionately affect Black and Native American women.
