Our mission is to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world.

About us

At the Obama Foundation, we are guided by a core belief: that ordinary people working together can change history. Our mission is to inspire those people to take action, empower them to change their world for the better, and connect them so they can achieve more together than they can alone. We were founded by community organizers, so when we seek change, we do it by bringing people together. That approach begins at home, on the South Side of Chicago, where we are building the Obama Presidential Center. The Center represents a historic opportunity for Chicago: a chance to build a world-class museum and public gathering space that celebrates our nation’s first African American President and First Lady, steps away from where he began his career, where she was raised, and where—together—they made their home. But that approach extends to all our work, whether it’s holding leadership training sessions in communities throughout the U.S., bringing local leaders together in countries around the world, working to support the global education of girls, or ensuring young men of color have pathways to opportunity. As President Obama has said, “we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together.” So join us.

As the Olympic and Paralympic Games come to a close, we’re celebrating the athletes that made us feel inspired, and the behind-the-scenes crew that made it all happen. We’re especially proud of Calen and Justin, part of our Girls Opportunity Alliance and My Brother's Keeper Alliance programs, who had the opportunity to intern with NBC Olympics in Paris and Stamford, CT! Take a look at what they got up to during their time with NBCUniversal:

Today we proudly welcome our seventh cohort of Obama Scholars! Made up of 30 leaders at the University of Chicago and Columbia University, these changemakers are from all around the world and will participate in an immersive program in Chicago or New York City, during the 2024-2025 academic year. Throughout their time as Obama Scholars, we’ll also bring the leaders together for weekly learning sessions and in-person convenings, encouraging collaboration and bonds that hopefully last a lifetime as they navigate their leadership journeys. Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸 Today, we reflect on the values so many Americans embody – hard work, responsibility, and looking out for one another. 📸 Back in 2011, President Obama showed love to the people in the crowd after addressing the attendees at a Labor Day celebration in Detroit, Michigan.

Any chance I have to talk about the work of the Obama Foundation and the Obama Presidential Center excites me, but last week was extra special. Thanks John Legend for taking time to join us in Chicago for a tour of the Center – next time we’ll have to get you in some construction boots and a hard hat! But this isn’t the first time John has lent his time to the Foundation. Back in 2019 he joined President Obama, Steph Curry, and other incredible folks for My Brother's Keeper Alliance's MBK Rising event. I’m especially proud of that convening because we brought together hundreds of young men of color and leaders from our MBK Communities to celebrate the folks paving the way in reducing youth violence and improving the life outcomes for boys and young men of color across the country. We’re excited to have John involved in future Obama Presidential Center projects and we’re working hard every single day to bring this campus to life on the South Side of Chicago.

Through our Foundation initiatives like the Voyager and Scholars programs, we have connected hundreds of 44 Alumni with young people to help support them on their early leadership journeys. “So much has happened since 2008,” Pam Coleman, a long-time community organizer and former White House staffer shared. “There are so many reasons for young people to turn away from leadership, yet they do not. The Obama Foundation young leaders continue to strive to make a difference no matter what.” Get to know Pam Coleman, Clarence J. Fluker, Jason Rahlan, and Ny Whitaker, four Obama alums who are inspiring the next generation of changemakers through their invaluable mentorship: https://lnkd.in/g6mDW4Zi
