OBJECT TERRITORIES recently participated in two public engagement events on Governors Island to share our work on returning habitat to our urban shorelines. Visitors learned about plans to install ecological armoring units and sea wall panels near Yankee Pier and were encouraged to model their own ideas for intertidal objects. About us
OBJECT TERRITORIES is a critical design practice located in Hong Kong and New York. With extensive experience in architecture, interiors, landscapes, and urbanism we engage the built environment at scales ranging from strategic interventions to regional masterplans. We explore the spatial conditions between objects and territories to develop intelligent forms and activate fields of organization. Through spatial, programmatic, and material innovation we design to enrich experience and cultivate social relationships. The office was founded by Marcus Carter, Miranda Lee, and Michael Kokora joined by shared design approaches developed in their experience working together.

Today is #WorldWaterDay, an annual United Nations observance day that highlights the importance of freshwater. From Billion Oyster Project's work restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor to the maritime and scientific leaders of the future at the New York Harbor School, Governors Island community of year-round tenants and partners are at the forefront of the work for a brighter, more sustainable future. ICYMI, we have six cutting-edge climate pilots set to join this community as part of the Trust for Governors Island’s Climate Solutions Challenge, presented through the Living Lab initiative. Meet them below and at https://lnkd.in/ekpiukJq, and get ready to witness climate solutions in action on Governors Island this summer: 💧 Duro UAS will pilot their Nearshore Sonde, a portable water monitoring device and cloud-based data dashboard. 💧 Just Ecocities will partner with Biohabitats to pilot a Tidal Planter that creates salt marsh while removing pollutants from New York Harbor. 💧 LÆRO will pilot Cycleau, their compact greywater treatment system, at the Island’s water refill stations and restrooms. 💧 OBJECT TERRITORIES will pilot their Intertidal Objects in the waters off Governors Island–habitat-friendly coastal protection units designed in collaboration with the Center for Architecture, Science, and Ecology (CASE) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, The Fort Miller Group, Inc., and afterNATURE. 💧 RETI Center and thread collective will pilot their Floating BlueBlocks Gardens, integrated ecological systems that can be installed in any body of water. 💧 Seaweed City will pilot their urban kelp farming infrastructure. The project is fiscally sponsored by Newtown Creek Alliance. The Living Lab is made possible with the generous support of Amazon, Con Edison, Donald A. Pels Charitable Trust, New York Community Trust, Deutsche Bank, and LISC NY.
