About us
Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana is rebuilding abundant and biodiverse oceans by winning science-based policies in countries that control one-quarter of the world’s wild fish catch. With more than 275 victories that stop overfishing, habitat destruction, oil and plastic pollution, and the killing of threatened species like turtles, whales, and sharks, Oceana’s campaigns are delivering results. A restored ocean means that 1 billion people can enjoy a healthy seafood meal every day, forever. Together, we can save the oceans and help feed the world. Visit Oceana.org to learn more.

BREAKING: Today, new estimates put the North Atlantic right whale population around 372 individuals, which means they are still very much at risk of extinction. Far too many North Atlantic right whales are still dying from boat strikes and entanglements in fishing gear. With so few remaining, each death is a major blow to the population’s ability to recover. The U.S. government MUST do more to protect these whales. President Biden needs to finalize the updated Vessel Speed Rule immediately! More: https://oceana.ly/48yl0pH

🛟 The ocean is our life support system - but it needs our help urgently. Climate breakdown, pollution, habitat destruction, and overfishing are causing heating, acidification, and a decline in marine biodiversity. We need to come together #ForTheOcean and safeguard marine habitat before it’s too late! Learn more about how we are working to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 alongside Bloomberg Philanthropies at for-the-ocean.org

European Union law requires countries to allocate fishing opportunities based on transparent and objective criteria, taking into account the benefits for society, the economy, and the environment. However, in practice, most countries distribute fishing quotas primarily to those with a history of catching the most fish, favoring industrial fleets over artisanal vessels. This approach harms both coastal fishing communities and the marine environment. Oceana in Europe photo exhibition, showcasing low-impact fishers across Europe, took place from 30 September to 4 October in front of the European Parliament in Brussels. It introduced David, Muireann, Neily, and Primitivo — artisanal fishers dedicated to providing fresh, high-quality seafood while preserving the sustainability and heritage of their coastal communities.
