The rapid intensification of Hurricane Milton, from storm to Category 5 in under 24 hours, is MORE than ALARMING 🛑 This is directly linked to rising ocean temperatures, driven by decades of fossil fuel emissions. The ocean has absorbed 90% of the excess heat from our greenhouse gas emissions— an energy equivalent to 8 Hiroshima bombs detonating every seconds! That heat isn’t disappearing. It’s fueling extreme weather events like we’re witnessing today. It’s not just about singular megastorms anymore. Rapid intensification is becoming the new norm, especially in places like the Gulf of Mexico, where ocean temperatures have been consistently above average for over a decade. We must STOP fossil fuel emissions, shift towards plant-based diets, reduce plastic use, and adopt sustainable modes of transportation. Collective action can mitigate further damage, but it requires commitment from all of us, and for our politicians to wake up and LOOK UP. THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW..? In the movie two things happen: The movie shows how the AMOC, which carries warm water from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic, can be disrupted by melting polar ice. This could cause the Gulf Stream to slow down or stop, which could lead to a significant drop in temperatures. (not entirely true ... yet) but it was predicative of many issues facing us today Hurricane Milton is taking on the infamous title of the fastest growing hurricane (from storm to Category 5 in less than 24 hours is extremely concerning) and is due to unusually warm ocean water caused by fossil fuel extraction and manufacture. (YES I am saying it!) The ocean has been absorbing 90% of the heat energy generated by our anthropogenic GHG emissions for decades, (equivalent energy to 8 Hiroshima bombs exploding underwater per second). Where did we think it would go??? Simply described: hotter water evaporates more readily, and rising columns of warm, moist air from that evaporation fuel rapid intensification. Ocean heat in the Gulf of Mexico, is near a record high rocketing away from the global average for the last decade. In the meantime climate change/breakdown has been removed from textbooks in Florida by its State Governor, and of course FEMA funding along with other federal funding refused. https://lnkd.in/es4MY3Vb I lived in Florida for less than 5 years and experienced hurricanes that grew in intensity. It is now no longer a matter of the odd mega hurricane forming (I was there when they announced the new Category of 5) but also the added worry of the extreme speed at which they form into intense storms. While The Day After Tomorrow movie may have been panned critically - it is starting to demonstrate prophetic signs - ACTION - Support all action to stop further fossil fuel emissions entering the atmosphere; and support a majority plant based diet.
