Valerie has over 20 years of experience working with conservation non-profits and brings a wealth of expertise in sustainable supply chains and ocean conservation to the O2 Board. She’s participated in three Climate Rides over the years, riding 350-450 miles each time in beautiful places with great people, all while raising money for organizations that work for active transportation and mitigating climate change! O2 Asia Fisheries Director, Jeremy Crawford, recently traveled to China to participate in an annual get together with project partners and donors. These included Qingdao Marine Conservation Society, WWF, Environmental Defense Fund, The Nature Conservancy, Greenpeace, Oceans 5, Oceankind, Oak Foundation, and others whose work encompasses supporting sustainable domestic fisheries management, helping to reduce IUU fishing in distant water fisheries, and promoting MPAs. Along with meeting NGO partners, Jeremy was also able to visit the China Council for International Cooperation on Environmental Development (CCIECED), Xiemen University, and a local squid processing facility to learn more on what can be done to help accelerate collaborative sustainable fisheries strategies.
Asia Fishery Improvement Manager, Ho-Tu Chiang, is in San Francisco for the Blue Pioneers Accelerator Program — two weeks of in-person classes, field trips, and networking events aimed at empowering individuals to work together and tackle complex problems in marine conservation and ocean management.
Small Scale Fisheries Senior Manager, Ivan Martinez, was recently in Rome repping O2 at the 2nd Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) Summit 👉 https://bit.ly/3xRoSUG The Summit is a platform for SSF movements to engage with governments and other SSF advocates, addressing challenges and sharing solutions regarding the implementation of the UN-FAO SSF Guidelines. It was great to connect with our friends and colleagues in the SSF world, including O2 Board Member, Philippa Cohen!

Steve is President of the Japan Society of Northern California, a nonprofit founded in 1905 with the mission of connecting Japan and the San Francisco Bay Area. Steve has spent much of his career working with and in Japan, and prior to his current role, was a startup founder, senior executive and advisor to high-tech startups and corporations in Silicon Valley and Japan. Fun Fact: When younger, Steve ran the NYC marathon in less than 3 hours! Although his pace and endurance have gotten worse with age, he continues to enjoy jogging on a regular basis.
