Helping communities help themselves.
About us
Founded in 1961, the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation continues to assist communities across all 50 states and the U.S. territories. These communities have different economic profiles and demographic make-ups but share the goal of supporting the military mission. With headquarters in Arlington, Virginia and the Western Regional Office in Sacramento, California, the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation employs an interdisciplinary staff that helps states and communities support the National Security Strategy by achieving economic resiliency and agility in the face of shifting Department of Defense priorities. This is done by engaging with state and community leaders, the Military Services, and other Federal agencies to develop strategies around positive economic growth; support nearby civilian use adjustments; and ensure the balance of community growth in order to enhance the readiness, resiliency and sustainability of installations and in support of the military mission.

#ICYMI: Last month, the United States Department of Defense awarded fourteen Defense Community Infrastructure Program (DCIP) grants from the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation, totaling approximately $100 million. DCIP is a competitive program for states, territories, and communities to undertake infrastructure enhancements to support military value, the training of cadets at independent "covered educational institutions," installation resiliency, and/or family quality of life that benefits their local installations. #infrastructure #defense #qualityoflife #grantannouncement On August 1, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations, and Environment Brendan Owens instructed the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation to invite grant applications for fourteen projects based on a competitive ranking of all proposed projects in response to a March 28 DCIP Notice of Funding Opportunity. These awards derive from Fiscal Year 2024 appropriated funding and leverage an additional $31.5 million in non-federal funding, for a total investment of $131.1 million. "The Defense Community Infrastructure Program continues to be a significant tool for the Department to enhance the critical relationship between installations and their respective communities," said Dr. William A. LaPlante, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment. "This year's program demonstrates how communities can come together with their military partners to address critical infrastructure needs that will enhance both the military mission and community resilience. The Department looks forward to seeing these projects come to fruition." Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation reposted this
The Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation released its FY23 Defense Spending by State report yesterday to help states and communities better understand how defense procurement, personnel spending, and grants impact their economies: https://lnkd.in/e4aJy2pk “Our National Defense Industrial Strategy makes clear that a robust and resilient industrial base provides the enduring foundation for military advantage,” said Dr. William LaPlante, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment. “Businesses small and large across America are the heart of our industrial might, and this report is a tremendous resource that our state and local partners can use to better understand defense spending in their areas and strengthen supply chains.” The report provides public and private leaders with a starting place to assess how defense investments across installations, communities, and the private sector can be optimized by supporting regional innovation, industrial capability and capacity, supply chain resilience, and cultivating a skilled workforce. The Maryland Department of Commerce has received a $1.06 million federal grant to launch the Resilient Maryland Defense Communities program. The program, funded through the United States Department of Defense Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation, aims to help the state and communities partner with local military installations and departments to support the long-term viability of military installations. Maryland will partner with the military, local defense communities, and various state agencies driving resilience planning in the state, including the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) Office of Resilience and the Maryland Department of Planning, who will play key supporting roles in this project. Military resilience is the capability of a military installation to avoid, prepare for, minimize the effect of, adapt to, and recover from extreme weather events, or from anticipated or unanticipated changes in environment. If an installation’s mission is threatened, this could not only have impacts on the defense community as a whole, but could also greatly impact the regional economy by affecting employment and businesses that make up the regional defense industrial base. #military #resilience #defense #onecommunity
