This tragedy highlights how urgent and interconnected our challenges are. The triple crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are directly and adversely impacting our cities. In such context, we strongly believe that the One Health approach should guide cities adapting urban spaces with nature-based solutions including social inclusion to minimize impact of climate disasters and protect urban populations. As European cities face these threats, it's time to bring One Health to the forefront of EU policy. This tragedy highlights how urgent and interconnected our challenges are. The triple crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are directly and adversely impacting our cities. In such context, we strongly believe that the One Health approach should guide cities adapting urban spaces with nature-based solutions including social inclusion to minimize impact of climate disasters and protect urban populations. 🌍✨ Last week, we successfully completed the 3rd Transnational Meeting of the One Health 4 Cities [URBACT Network] ! We were welcomed with incredible hospitality by the city of Elefsina, its local organisations, and its wonderful citizens. I also had the honour of presenting our network at the 2nd Ecoculture Festival in Elefsina. 🎤🌿 We learned so much from this remarkable city, where the layers of ancient history and industrial heritage have left an unforgettable mark. 🏛️🏭 If you haven’t heard about Elefsina, now’s the time! 🇬🇷 This city is one of the 5 sacred cities of ancient Greece, home to the Eleusinian Mysteries. In 2023, Elefsina was the Cultural Capital of Europe, hosting outstanding cultural events and transforming its industrial sites into unique cultural venues. 🎭🏙️ Reuse and sustainability were key, all while preserving the city’s rich history. ♻️ During the meeting, we dove deep into #OneHealth at the national and local levels. Along with our partners, we engaged in a One Health role-playing activity, envisioning the future of Elefsina. 🤝 🌳 Our network's ad-hoc expert, Christophe Gouache, guided us through designing testing actions with and for the citizens. We also explored innovative ways to connect One Health with art and culture! 🎨🧑⚕️ Stay tuned for more insights! In addition, through discussions, themes are developed with the participation of scientists, academics, artists, and active citizens about the impact of the climate crisis on different ecosystems (from stars to water and on lifestyle, coexistence, and cultivation), as well as ways to address disasters.   ♻ ♻ ♻ This festival continues Elefsina’s legacy as the 'European Capital of Culture' in 2023, extending its mission to blend culture and sustainability. ☀ Our expert, Sofia Aivalioti, shared insights on our network's ambition to create more sustainable future cities by embracing the coexistence of humans, animals, and plants within urban ecosystems. The One Health 4 Cities network is proud to have co-authored the call to action presented by Mayor of Lahti Niko Kyynäräinen at the ICLEI conference in Aalborg. This call urges cities to adopt a One/planetary Health approach and encourages the EU to support these efforts. Our nine partner cities are actively working to integrate One Health principles into their urban environments. This call builds upon the Lyon Declaration for One Health and the successful "People and Planet" conference in Lahti. Here are the main objectives for them: 🔵 Gain insights from local experts on One Health implementation in Greece, with a focus on Elefsina. Delve deeper into the connections between One Health and Elefsina’s unique cultural and historical context. 🔵 Explore Elefsina’s initiatives on One Health, including their collaborations with local schools, and learn about their strategies and future plans.  🔵 Explore the engagement and communication strategies of stakeholders and citizens and learn how testing actions can enhance effective engagement and outreach. 🔵 Reflect on the key takeaways from the past three cluster meetings.  🔵 Exchange ideas with your peers on best practices, challenges, and lessons learned from URBACT Local Group Meetings. 🔵 Finally, connect with the group, engage with local experts, and immerse yourself in the rich history of Elefsina and Athens The meeting is taking place in the city of Elefsina in Greece, european capital of culture in 2023. Known since antiquity as one of Greece's oldest cities, Elefsina has developed into one of the country's leading industrial zones. Today, the city faces several challenges, that they are willing to tackle with the One Health approach (such as the pollution associated with their history of industrialization). We are very lucky to be welcomed here.
