AI is driving the next wave of change in the workplace, creating demand for new jobs and skills. LinkedIn data reveals that by 2030, 70% of the skills needed in most roles will evolve, with AI emerging as a catalyst. This transformation might come with challenges, but it also opens up new opportunities. Here's how leaders can get started: 💡 Embrace the change: Encourage your team to experiment with AI. Start by exploring where AI can enhance current processes and help your team adopt AI tools with confidence, freeing them up to innovate and get creative. 🧠 Create a culture of learning: Build your team’s expertise in both technical and human-centered skills. The right mix of skills will give professionals and organizations a competitive edge. What an inspiring panel of speakers. A must-see panel!
If you’re going to ASU+GSV Summit in April, I’ll be leading this conversation with experts from Indeed, Google, McKinsey & Company, and Tallo (see below 👇🏾 ). You’ve likely already heard all of the “talk” on skills-first hiring ⏩ this conversation will focus on *action* for STARs: the 50% of U.S. workers skilled through alternative routes, rather than a bachelor’s degree. The #TearthePaperCeiling movement is powered by people taking *action* for STARs - and by STARs themselves - BOTH of which will be represented in this panel, including these Opportunity@Work partners: - Indeed VP Social Impact and Sustainability Abigail Carlton - Tallo CEO Allison Danielsen - Google Head of Education & Workforce Partnerships Rob Magliaro - McKinsey & Company Partner Carolyn Pierce Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 8 at 10:10 AM. It’s time to ditch unnecessary degree screens and other pointless barriers: to tear the paper ceiling keeping employers from talent and STARs. It was wonderful getting to present with you Clayton Lord, Jaimie Francis, Madelyn Rahn, and Amanda Winters! I loved hearing about all of the fantastic work that you are all doing. Thank you to Taylor Hansen for inviting me to participate on this panel. I am looking forward to our continued partnership with all of you! Opportunity@Work
Senior Program Director, SHRM Foundation leading employer-side efforts on future of work, skills-first, quality jobs, mental health and thriving, and untapped talent, so that all workers and workplaces can thrive.
A skills first future (and any change movement) is most successful when you aren’t doing it alone. I was honored to share the stage with Jaimie Francis, Paige Bongiorno, Madelyn Rahn, and Amanda Winters at the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Talent Forward event today to talk about the importance of connections, coalitions, and communities of practice to drive and scale a skills-first future. Whether you’re talking about SHRM Foundation’s pending Center for a Skills First Future (www.skillsfirstfuture.org), Opportunity@Work’s Public Sector Hub, SkillsFWD’s LER implementation cohort, or National Governors Association’s Skilling the States collaborative, investments in employers aligning, collaborating, experimenting, and connecting through communities and coalitions based in practice are crucial to: (1) de-risking the practice changes involved in transitioning to a skills-first paradigm, (2) creating safe spaces to innovate towards stable products and ways of working that can scale, and (3) developing expertise in cohort so everyone can benefit from collective knowledge to go farther faster. Grateful for the opportunity to think through the importance of cohorts and communities of practice, and to share the ways SHRM Foundation will be making more possible more quickly as we head toward an inevitable skills-first future. Thanks to Taylor Hansen and Jason Tyszko for the invitation!

A degree doesn’t define talent—skills do. That's why we're breaking down barriers and advocating for skills-based growth. Earlier this month at #SXSW, Michelle O'Hern Murphy [she/her] joined Byron Auguste of Opportunity@Work to discuss how removing outdated degree requirements is key to building an innovative, inclusive workforce. Read Michelle Murphy's perspective on skills-based hiring.
