In mental health, one of the biggest challenges is to provide timely access to care. Kingston Health Sciences Centre partnered with OPTT Health and Frontenac, Lennox & Addington Ontario Health Team, to reduce wait times, costs, and improve quality of patient care. “OCI is really playing a pivotal role because within a very short period of time it was able to fund projects that are making a difference, that matter. Innovation is vital to the future of healthcare. However, implementing new innovations into healthcare settings has long been a pain point. The Ontario government, through OCI, is now making that much easier! Our Innovating Digital Health Solutions program invested in 13 projects that brought together SMEs and Ontario health teams. These projects led to reduced call wait times, improved patient outcomes, increased access to critical care, and much more. When we think about hospitals, we usually picture large buildings with expansive parking lots or towering structures in bustling city centers. But this photo shows the 100-year-old administrative office of a small, 12-bed hospital in rural Maine. This hospital operates quite differently from what we typically expect. For every dollar spent, this hospital earns only 30 cents. In a typical healthcare system, such an operation would be shut down, and many have been. But Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital remains open because the community needs it and has made a commitment to keep it alive through contributions. This isn't just a typical hospital; it's the only care option within a two-to-five-hour radius for hundreds of people. It's also the sole social safety net for those with behavioral health and substance use disorders. As a result, the hospital's beds have sheltered young people in crisis, its cafeteria has hosted community meetings, and its cooks have prepared extra food to share with those in need. I invite you to consider how our current fee-for-service model, which often views people as transactions rather than whole individuals, has led to a lack of care and support for many. This model, coupled with insufficient financial and community backing, has hindered access to vital services.
