New + exciting progress on the Oregon Acoustics Research Laboratory (OARL) facility being built at the Port of Portland's Mass Timber and Housing Innovation Campus at Terminal 2✨ Lack of acoustics testing facilities is widely recognized as a barrier to the development of affordable mass timber multi-family assemblies in North America. The OARL will open doors for jurisdictional code approval in the adoption of mass timber products in the residential construction market - while supporting the Oregon mass timber ecosystem🌲

MODSpdx, in collaboration with Freres Wood, has unveiled a completed housing model crafted from Mass Ply Panels (MPP) - a sustainable, high-quality material revolutionizing modular construction. This approach offers a faster, scalable solution to Oregon's affordable housing crisis. Next stop: John Day, Oregon - where 18 hybrid MPP structures will provide much-needed affordable housing. Supported by USDA Rural Development and the OMTC, this project exemplifies how innovative materials and partnerships can tackle complex challenges. Today, Kenneth Anderton and I led a tour of Terminal 2, the future site of the Port of Portland's future Mass Timber Housing and Innovation Campus (MTHIC), as part of the Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference. Our discussions focused on a key theme of the conference: how we can learn from each other to accelerate the production of affordable housing through innovative products that deliver higher quality units more efficiently and cost-effectively. The Port's next major project, MTHIC, aims to do just that—transforming a historic marine terminal into a hub for housing manufacturing innovation, mass timber research, and collaboration across construction, manufacturing, climate-tech, and entrepreneurship, ultimately increasing housing production to address the housing shortage. We were joined by Mark Fretz from the University of Oregon who shared details on the future Acoustic Research and Energy Studies in Buildings laboratories that will be located at MTHIC, as well as their collaborative efforts with Oregon State University at the TallWood Design Institute on the Mass Plywood Panel (MPP) workforce housing prototype. These are just a few of the projects that the Port and its partners at the Oregon Mass Timber Coalition are working on, to expand the mass timber ecosystem and increase affordable housing options. We also visited MODSpdx to hear from Nathan Young and see their MPP modular prototype, showcasing an example of sustainable, factory-built housing solutions. Small House 🏠 Big Impact On Thursday, November 7th, an excited group of developers, builders, researchers, and community members traveled to the A.A. "Red" Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Lab to take a look at the newest Mass Plywood Panel (MPP) Workforce Housing Prototype, designed in collaboration with the experts at TallWood Design Institute (TDI) and the University of Oregon Institute for Health in the Built Environment (IHBE). We captured a few candid impressions of the house below:

🏠 Future Homes Could Be Pieced Together like Gingerbread Houses! 🍭 🚨 A new project at the TallWood Design Institute aims to revolutionise home construction using mass plywood panels, offering a sustainable and efficient solution to housing shortages. 🔎 Key Highlights: 1️⃣ Innovative Construction: Researchers have demonstrated a two-bedroom prototype home built with mass plywood panels—stronger than cross-laminated timber and lighter than steel. This approach speeds up the construction process and addresses Oregon's housing crisis, particularly in the realm of affordable and middle-workforce housing. 2️⃣ Prefabricated Potential: The vision for future homes includes a flatpack delivery model similar to Ikea furniture. With the help of a small crane, these homes could be assembled quickly and efficiently, significantly reducing traditional construction timelines while enhancing energy efficiency and reducing waste. 3️⃣ Environmental Benefits: This construction method utilises small-diameter logs, which are often overlooked, to help manage Northwest forests and reduce wildfire risks. “Visitors have been enthusiastic about the prototype, and several have asked how they can get one,” said Judith Sheine, UO professor of architecture and director of design for the institute, who led the project alongside assistant professor Mark Fretz. “Hopefully this will lead to the production of prefabricated mass timber housing in Oregon."
