From the recent GAO report: “the Bering Sea pollock trawl fishery is considered one of the most heavily monitored U.S. commercial fisheries. Federal regulations require vessels to maintain at least 100 percent observer coverage.” This means that every Bering Sea pollock trawl vessel has either a human observer or an electronic monitoring system—sometimes both. Seafood is sustainable and nutritious food. However, U.S. seafood producers are unable to compete against other nations that produce seafood at lower costs and lower standards. This bill will help our domestic seafood industry compete and strengthen our rural communities.
