The state of Texas is projecting a 73% population increase over the next 50 years! When thinking about all that water usage, how do we ensure water security for a growing state? PAE’s Associate Principal Justin Stenkamp was a technical advisor for the Texas Net Zero Water Toolkit, which aims to guide property developers, owners, and other professionals in smart water design. By using Net Zero Water principles that offer developments ways to capture, store, and treat water onsite, buildings can shift the traditional water cycle and provide for their own water, independence, and resiliency. Congratulations to the Seattle Aquarium and LMN Architects on the new Ocean Pavilion! This new space includes a 350,000-gallon main along with an exterior public viewing space. The estimated 1.2 million annual visitors will enjoy over 100 different species like leopard sharks, spotted eagle rays, and even a mangrove forest! Crucially, PAE’s recommendation to include water-to-water heat exchangers that will recapture heat from tank water being discharged and use it to heat the incoming makeup seawater from Puget Sound will save millions of BTUHs of energy each year.

The wait is now over! The Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion designed by LMN Architects in collaboration with Thinc Design, NY, NY opens tomorrow Thursday. “Step out of the Pacific Northwest and into a warm, bright and vibrant underwater world teeming with life. Join us to discover the wonders of a reef ecosystem in the Coral Triangle—a region in the Indo-Pacific so rich in biodiversity that’s it’s been called ‘the Amazon of the ocean’! You’ll come face to face with 3,500 animals and plants: sharks, rays, schooling fish, mangroves, nearly 30 species of coral and so much more. “As a complement to the habitat experience, the Ocean Pavilion will tell an unforgettable story about Earth’s one ocean through state-of-the-art digital storytelling. Guests of all ages will come away with a deepened understanding that all waters are connected. That our fate and the ocean’s are one and the same. And that, together, we can make a difference for the ocean we all depend on.” To learn more about the Ocean Pavilion and to buy tickets for the weekend visit the Seattle Aquarium website: https://lnkd.in/gRmYaxep

Now that the new airport terminal at PDX is open, we can’t wait to share some engineering insights about what’s going on behind the scenes! - The project increased the terminal size by 40% while cutting the per-square-foot energy needs in half. - The inefficient steam heating system is being replaced by ground source heat pumps, converting the entire airport to over 90% fossil fuel-free heating. - All of the work was done in a continuously open and operating international airport!
