We are thrilled that our work at the Jim and Janet Sinegal Center for Science and Innovation has won a Higher Education Design Award from the International Interior Design Association New England Chapter. Partnering with Mithun of Seattle, it was a privilege to bring this project to life for Seattle University. Seeing this transformative building recognized in the competitive category of academic architecture – up against 14 other wonderful projects from our northeast US colleagues – is a true honor! Designed as a vibrant, student-centric hub, the Center fosters interaction among all university students, promoting exploration, collaboration, and experiential learning. The central atrium serves as a focal point, complemented by a dynamic skylight, and transparency is incorporated throughout both interior and exterior to showcase student life and experience. Embracing a future-proof approach, the facility prioritizes flexible, efficient planning, with thoughtfully organized spaces and intuitive wayfinding that creates a feeling of relaxation among users. The Center’s LEED Gold certification reflects a commitment to sustainability with authentic, locally sourced materials that are durable and maintainable. With many thanks and congrats to our client and partners! #HigherEducation #Design #Architecture #AcademicDesign IIDA New England Photography by: Kevin Scott; David Sundberg/Esto

"Plumbing engineers design the least sexy places within the least sexy spaces: bathrooms and mechanical rooms. We create crucial designs and spaces for every building, but typically we don't get many opportunities to show off our designs. Bathrooms and mechanical rooms aren't often seen as sexy. "Bathrooms require piping – but it's installed behind the walls which is also the case throughout the building with all engineering systems in all rooms. "A mechanical room is the engineer's chance to show off a design. Mechanical rooms are usually behind a locked, double door ... but once you get inside, as these images show, aren’t they cool? As an engineer, mechanical rooms are by far my favorite spaces to be in. The full array of systems installed is difficult to understand and the room looks like a soup bowl, but these are the rooms that make a building function appropriately, and they are completely necessary, and that makes them sexy to me. "The sun’s energy has been utilized by electrical engineers for years by way of PV panels, but what some don’t know is that plumbing has also been able to use the sun’s energy to pre-heat domestic water for years. When the sun’s power is intense enough, this technology is a very effective option for energy savings – and yes, even though it's on the roof, it's an opportunity to show off a plumbing design which is a nice feeling. My guess is you will see this technology used quite a bit in the future. – Page Senior Plumbing Engineer Benjamin Doyle #DesignMoments #PlumbingEngineers #MechanicalRooms #PlumbingDesign Photography by: Javier Acebal; John Benoist; Albert Vecerka/Esto; Dror Baldinger, AIA; Frank Ooms / Ooms, Inc.

The community-enhancing impact of public-private partnership was on full view during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for St. Austin Catholic Church & School’s new six-story, K-8 school and rectory. The celebration coincided with the opening of Union on San Antonio, The University of Texas at Austin's adjacent, 29-story student housing tower connected to the parish property via a skyline bridge to allow drop-off and competition gym functions. Our project team was honored to take part in the celebration which included parish members, Austin Mayor Kirk Preston Watson, and Jim Davis, Vice President and COO of the University of Texas at Austin, Reverend Father Chuck Kullmann, and team members from Greystar, the developer who brought the project and the parties together. The unique partnership solidifies St. Austin’s longstanding presence in, and care it has shown for, the surrounding downtown Austin neighborhood and University of Texas campus. The area has experienced significant growth and has transitioned to numerous high-rise, mixed-use properties that house and attract businesses, students, and residents as part of density spurred under the City of Austin’s university neighborhood overlay (UNO) ordinance. Greystar and St. Austin joined together to solve both community and parish challenges: the neighboring UT campus needed more student housing and St. Austin needed to enlarge and upgrade its facilities to serve the growing needs of its parish. Page designed the expansion and new facilities at St. Austin, as well as for Union on San Antonio, working with General Contractor HENSEL PHELPS. Union on San Antonio accommodates approximately 900 students, with 20% of the tower reserved for affordable housing -- an integral part of St. Austin’s mission. The residential tower opened up just before fall classes began at UT. “There are many symbiotic elements across the two projects,” said Senior Project Architect Tamara Toon Waddell, AIA. “The connecting bridge, for example, gives the K-8 students easy, safe access to class, and the residential tower may supply the church with university students looking for part-time jobs.” Drone photography: Greystar #publicprivatepartnership #highrisedesign #academic #studenthousing #studentlife #UT Austin
