Much of this belief stems from ancient historian Pliny the Elder, whose chapter about salt in the Historia Naturalis refers to an unclear role salt played in relation to honors in war. Plini’s side note of the Latin word “salarium”, does seem to link employment, salt, and soldiers, but according to Merriam-Webster Inc., Pliny was discussing the virtue and value of salt, and merely suggested the linkage. It is thought that had Pliny known more about this, he would have mentioned it. What is clear is that salt was a valuable commodity and that early Republican Rome had invested in mining it and transporting it through the Via Salaria- the salt road. The leader in PTO is San Marino, a microstate enclaved within Italy, with 46 days. Next is Uganda with 34, Jamaica with 21, and finally India with 18. Believe it or not, despite being a main factor in work-life balance and an attractive work benefit, PTO is often neglected. For example, according to Forbes, 31% of US employees don't have PTO.
