Loved hosting so many talented consumer founders last night at Pear SF, and a special thank you to Sam Chaudhary, founder and CEO of ClassDojo, for sharing many hard-earned gems with the group. Here are a few: * Best question when talking with early potential customers/users: "what makes you cry about your job?" Sam and his co-founder asked this question to teachers -- the main users of their initial product (now used by 45M people and growing quickly) -- to get to the heart of teachers' biggest problems. I love this question. The best consumer products hit an emotional nerve. * Build growth into the DNA of your product: Sam was lucky to have gotten early guidance from Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, who emphasized the value of network effects when building a venture-scale consumer business. * Obsess over the people most likely to obsess over your initial product: Sam and his co-founder iterated aggressively on their initial product to maximize delight for the customers most excited by their vision. Time and again I see shipping velocity and a desire to reduce time-to-magic as a leading indicator of success for consumer teams.
