Since 1981, the hub of pro bono legal services in Philadelphia.
About us
Philadelphia VIP was founded in 1981 by the Philadelphia Bar Association and Community Legal Services to meet the legal needs of low-income Philadelphians by recruiting and training attorneys to provide pro bono legal services. Since that time, the organization has recruited and trained thousands of private attorneys to create a pool of attorneys to provide consistent, high-quality representation to low-income clients with critical legal needs. VIP continues to implement creative and effective ways to bridge the gap between marginalized individuals, families and communities with legal needs and lawyers possessing the skills and ability to meet those needs. Today, VIP’s diverse volunteers serve more than 3,000 clients annually with legal issues that affect basic human needs. Philadelphia LawWorks, a project of Philadelphia VIP, is a pro bono referral program that serves nonprofits, small businesses and homeowners.

August's Volunteer of the Month is Kirk Baumeister, an attorney who built his career on intellectual property transactions while focusing his pro bono practice on adoptions with VIP. “It’s a good feeling to help these clients,” Kirk says. “I’ve had multiple clients try to pay me or give me gifts. I tell them that if they really want to give me something in return, all I’ll accept is a family photo after the adoption is final.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eHAp2_7r

Today, we say farewell to our legal intern Julianna Minus, a 2L at Rutgers Law School who joined VIP’s legal team for the summer. As a legal intern, Julianna worked with our clients to prepare their cases for volunteer attorneys. Her clients were mainly homeowners looking to clear up tangled titles or to make wills and pass on their assets. “I had done pro bono work at clinics before, but I never had the chance to keep in touch with clients and get to know them until this internship,” Julianna said. She plans to continue pursuing public interest work after she graduates. Thank you for your work this summer, Julianna!

We are proud to present VIP's 2023 Annual Report. Last year, volunteers like you contributed 21,969 #probono hours to our clients – that's over $8.4 million in free legal services. While many of you assisted our neighbors through urgent legal crises, still others took proactive steps to help our clients build and grow, as in our Community Economic Development project and estate planning initiative. Both of these programs reached new heights in 2023. We hope you will join us in reflecting on our shared work and take inspiration for your own pro bono mission, whatever that may be. VIP's Volunteer of the Month is Michelle Martinez, a student at Delaware Law School who helps to bridge the civil justice gap by interpreting for VIP's Spanish-speaking clients and preparing estate planning documents. “I like working one-on-one with clients because I care about them. I want to be the person who gets them a positive result.” Read more about Michelle here: https://lnkd.in/eiakttGJ

At last week's Small Business Legal Clinic at Blank Rome LLP, our clients met with #probono lawyers for counsel on the issues affecting their livelihoods. These businesses, which range from a family-owned cleaning company to a florist to an interpretation service, now have the answers they need to grow and operate with security. Thanks to all our volunteers and to Blank Rome for hosting us! If you missed the clinic, you can still volunteer to represent a small business client here: https://lnkd.in/e3CWQs8x

Last week at our Summer Pro Bono Program, we invited summer associates from across Philly to a seminar on the profession’s highest calling: helping others who can’t afford a lawyer. The law students who joined us are the future of the city’s legal community and, hopefully, future VIP volunteers. They heard from outstanding VIP volunteers Kristine Calalang, Timothy Hoban, Robin Holts, and Kevin M. Levy about the benefits of having an active pro bono practice. Thanks to our panelists, judges, and students, to our keynote speaker Lou Rulli, and to Pennsylvania Bar Institute for hosting us.

VIP's Volunteer of the Month is John Morabito, a former in-house lawyer who has grown his #probono practice in tandem with his solo legal practice. “My father was a general practice attorney in a small town,” John recalls. “He was an integral part of the community and I remember seeing him help our neighbors. I wanted to develop that skillset and serve individuals in need.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gNtMHkqk
