  • The home of The Philadelphia Orchestra is now, officially and permanently, Marian Anderson Hall! Tonight, we will welcome audiences to the Great Stages Concert, the first performance in the first major concert venue in the world to be named after the legendary contralto, civil rights icon, and Philadelphian. We are deeply honored to inhabit this living memorial to an exceptional Black American artist and look forward to Marian Anderson’s presence inspiring every performance that takes place here.

  • On June 8, 2024, Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will be rededicated as Marian Anderson Hall in honor of the legendary contralto, civil rights icon, and Philadelphian. The first major concert venue in the world to honor Marian Anderson--85 years after she was barred from performing at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, because of her race--the hall will be a permanent monument to its namesake's artistry and achievements, a reflection of the inclusive future she helped to engender, and an active testament to the intersection of music, art, and positive social impact. We look forward to celebrating Ms. Anderson’s extraordinary life and legacy and to honoring her in perpetuity with a venue that reflects the ideals by which she lived her life: equity, justice, freedom, and the belief that the arts are for everyone. • As Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping met in San Francisco this week, a different kind of summitry between their peoples happened in China at the same time, as musicians of The Philadelphia Orchestra demonstrated how cultural diplomacy can be a powerful force for good in the world. Read more about the importance of this work in a guest essay by President and CEO Matías Tarnopolsky that was published in today’s The New York Times:

The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 1973 Tour of China, the first by an American orchestra, is remembered today as a symbol of deep musical friendship. Since that first visit, the Orchestra has returned 11 times. Highlights from those visits over the years are documented in these photos. This week, musicians of the Orchestra will travel to China for two weeks of performances, shared musical experiences, and educational events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic 1973 tour. We hope that our music-making will continue to build bridges between our people and cultures for many years to come. Special thanks to our premier sponsor, Bank of China, for its support of the 50th anniversary tour of China.

  • Did you know The Philadelphia Orchestra is an Educational Improvement Organization (EIO) under Pennsylvania's Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC)? We reach 30,000 students annually through a variety of education initiatives. This program allows participating businesses to receive tax credits equal to 75% of their charitable contributions, up to a maximum of $750,000 per taxable year. Even more remarkable, businesses can boost their tax credit to 90% of the contribution if they agree to provide the same amount for two consecutive tax years. This incredible initiative fosters educational excellence. The Philadelphia Orchestra is excited to continue making a positive impact in our community!
