🚨Stop new factory farms!🚨New mega-polluting projects like the proposed new "Megafarm" in Norfolk should be blocked on environmental (and social) grounds. An extra 870,000 chickens and 14,000 pigs, would exaserbate so many problems with UK livestock: 🚨Emissions: Over 80% of the UK's agriculture emissions are linked to livestock - although cattle/sheep are biggest contributers, chickens and pigs aren't far behind 🚨Air pollution: In the UK, an estimated 60% of particulate air pollution comes from ammonia on UK farms - a large part of this is livestock manure, and factory farms churn out thousands of tonnes of concentrated manure. Excess nitrates drain into rivers, killing wildlife. 🚨Soil/water pollution: In the UK, industrial livestock farming produces more than 50,000 tonnes of untreated excreta per day; every region in the UK now has more nitrogen than it can absorb, degrading soils and running off into rivers. 🚨Animal welfare and pandemic risks: Ramming so many animals together is both terrible for their welfare, but also a breeding ground for antibiotic resistance and future pandemics. Climate change is a complex issue, but one surprising contributor is right under your nose...or should we say, in your burger. Red meat production creates an enormous amount of greenhouse gas emissions, which is a major driver of climate change. The greenhouse gases associated with red meat production include: 👉 Carbon Dioxide: Beef requires significantly more land, leading to deforestation and soil degradation, which releases carbon dioxide stored in the plants into the atmosphere. 👉 Methane: 1.5 billion cows are raised globally for meat production, emitting at least 231 billion pounds of methane – produced during the cow’s digestive process – into the atmosphere each year. 👉 Nitrous Oxide: Manure decomposition and synthetic nitrogen fertilizers used on feed crops release nitrous oxide. The animal agriculture sector is the largest human-caused source of nitrous oxide, accounting for 60-70% of emissions. Antibiotics play a critical role in combating bacterial infections in both humans and animals. However, they are often overused and misused in beef and pork industries, contributing to the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria – such as Salmonella and E. Coli – in the animals' guts. These bacteria can contaminate meat during processing or spread to food crops through fertilizer and water contaminated by animal waste, posing significant risks to consumers, including severe illness and even death. Let's combat antibiotic resistance and ensure safer food for all! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gYzRHkj7 #AntibioticResistance #FoodSafety #PublicHealth #AntibioticAwareness #HealthyEating #OneHealth

👏Massive news!👏 Health orgs representing over a million health professionals call for UK gov to scrap pro-meat ads funded by £millions of publicly regulated money. AHDB has spent £millions targeting pro-red meat and dairy ads at people who are cutting down on meat, pumping out misleading messaging downplaying red meat's environmental impact and implying we need red meat for nutrition. Some choice quotes from the health professionals letter: 👉 "In the UK, 70% of our total food-related emissions come from red meat and dairy production" 👉"Excess consumption of red meat and dairy is leading to 42,000 deaths in the UK annually" 👉"Although meat is a source of protein, zinc, iron and vitamin B12, these nutrients are easily obtained from a well-planned plant-based diet, as recognised by the British Dietetic Association" The organisations include Doctors Association UK, Plant-Based Health Professionals UK, the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, Eco Medics, BDA Renal Nutrition Specialist Group and many others. Did you know your hot dog habit could be hurting your heart? Processed red meat is a major driver of cardiovascular disease (CVD). One study found that consuming 150 grams (slightly more than 5 ounces) or more a week increased the risk of CVD by 46% and the risk of death by 50% compared to eating no processed red meat. Let's choose healthier options! Read more: https://lnkd.in/gUJeXUbZ #ReduceProcessedMeat #HealthyEating #HeartHealth #CardiovascularDisease
Did you know that red meat production has a devastating impact on our planet? According to the FAO, livestock farming contributes a whopping 14.5% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions! These gases trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to global warming. This warming causes extreme weather conditions, rising sea levels, and more frequent infectious disease outbreaks. 🚨Alert: Meat industry using fossil lobbying tactics🚨 Major new reports find: 1) European meat/dairy corporations have weakened a third of major EU climate/ag policies studied, and totally stalled half - pushing disinformation downplaying and deflecting meat's impact on the climate, with their messaging picked up especially by right wing groupings in European Parliament like EPP. Meat/dairy causes an estimated 85% of Europe's agriculture emissions. 2) Over $500 million was spent influencing the Farm Bill and other US agriculture legislation, more than fossil fuel spent on lobbying, between 2019-23. We need more coordinated pushback to big meat/dairy corporations! The report on the EU is from Influence Map, in accompanying quote Chris Packham said "The issues of livestock emissions and a need to transition to a more plant-based food system requires the farming industry to work boldly and quickly alongside government and scientists to strengthen climate policies, not weaken them." Read their report here: https://lnkd.in/egrEWXaP The report on the US/farm bill is from Union of Concerned Scientists, saying: “This is an industry that regularly spends more money lobbying Congress than either Big Oil or defense contractors." Beef production is a top driver of the climate crisis, and a recent study says just a small percentage – 12% – of people in the US account for half of all beef consumed in the US. According to the study, men and people between the ages of 50 and 65 were more likely to be in what the researchers dubbed as “disproportionate beef eaters”. Based on a recommended daily 2,200 calorie-diet, these individuals eat more than four ounces – the rough equivalent of more than one hamburger – daily. A new study suggests a link between red and processed meat consumption and kidney damage in women with diabetes or diabetic nephropathy (DN). DN is a serious complication of diabetes that can lead to kidney failure. The study found that women who consumed more red and processed meats were more likely to have: - Higher levels of protein in their urine (a sign of kidney damage) - Higher blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels - An increased risk of DN Read more: https://lnkd.in/gq9kZQj9 #DiabetesAwareness #DiabeticNephropathy #KidneyHealth #MedicalResearch #Nutrition
