In partnership with LAUSD and CannonDesign, our team has successfully completed the comprehensive modernization of Shenandoah Elementary School! This campus-wide transformation was designed to create an educational experience with an emphasis on next-generation technology, a flexible learning environment and outdoor spaces. Highlights of the project include the construction of a stunning brand-new, two-story classroom building, the modernization of existing classrooms, administration and library and the removal of outdated portable structures. “I am proud to have been part of the Shenandoah Elementary School design-build project –it has been both engaging and rewarding. Watching a large asphalt playground with several bungalows transform into a state-of-the-art, two-story building, complete with a new green space playground was inspiring,” said Frank Ibarra, Project Executive. We are excited to share the transformation of Shenandoah Elementary School's outdoor space, a model for innovative outdoor learning environments in #LosAngeles. As highlighted during a recent Los Angeles Unified School District tour, led in part by our Principal, Robin Carmichael, this collaboration between LAUSD, Pinner Construction Co., Inc., CannonDesign, and Pamela Burton & Company demonstrates how thoughtful design can enhance student health, safety, and engagement. The project expanded green space from 5% to 37%, integrating nature into daily student life while fostering inclusivity and well-being. Key features include: · 𝐓𝐡𝐞 “𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫” 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲: A playful homage to the school’s shark mascot, guiding students across campus and protecting the green space. · 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: A sundial tetherball pole and wind-observing blown grasses engage students with natural elements. · 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧: Fibonacci-sequence plants like Echeveria and Pine Trees inspire math-based exploration. · 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐛𝐨𝐰 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧: Color-coordinated plants create opportunities for drawing and color identification. · 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬: Irregularly shaped fields promote active participation by all students. This thoughtful integration of learning, nature, and safety sets a new standard for outdoor education.
