    Innovative brands in grocery need to move even faster, and pay even closer attention to food trends. If we (collectively) want to take market share from the big guys, we need to use our speed to shelf advantages to their maximum potential. Case in point: Birria has been around for centuries, but in the past two years it has taken off as a mainstream trend. The catalyst was when the traditional Birria Goat Tacos mutated into Beef Quesadilla form and became a TikTok sensation. Now Birria is everywhere on restaurant menus and is a big part of the 2024 food zeitgeist. So where are all the “Birria-flavored” CPG LTO SKUs? Consumers are ready to pay for Birria pork rinds, chips, salsas, marinades, pretzels, ad Infinitum right now.     Get ready to hear a lot of rhetoric around “Price Gouging” of Bananas and Coffee over the next 4-6 weeks. Even if the ILA strike only lasts a few days, there will be a supply shock that will take weeks to work through. Most consumers don’t have a good understanding of how Bananas and Coffee come into the country “green”, and with east coast ports offline, recovery won’t be quick. These commodities are so ubiquitous that the demand won’t evaporate anytime soon, so pricies are going up…maybe significantly. Misinformed consumers and pandering politicians will try to pin this on retailers. The timing 1 month before the election positions this as a pivotal narrative of Q4. There will also be domino effects on the price of Strawberries, Avocados, and other high velocity produce. It probably isn’t a bad time to be in the tea business, either. For any brand NOT directly impacted by the strike, this is an opportunity to drive unit sales with promotional activity…retailers are going to be looking to give consumers any relief they can.     There is a post very similar to this which goes viral on LinkedIn roughly every week. Yet hundreds of the brands that are most upset with the lack of transparency and leverage that they have continue to work with those same distributors year after year and nobody ever has an actionable solution other than to closely montior the deductions as they roll in. Regional distributors can be a great choice if you have the bandwidth to manage each of them in parallel, and your target retailers want to work with them. If you want to work with large scale national retailers, many of them don’t want to work with regional distribution. There have been a few hundred brands (including some very successful mature brands) who decided this year not to work with the incumbent distributors and move to us instead. Their retailers were fine with it. We are over 2000 active brands now and anyone is welcome to join anytime. If you are waiting for a day when these deductions stop, you will be waiting for a very long time because it is their core source of income. Meanwhile, most emerging brands are wasting immense amounts of money by selling product to the national distributors FOB instead of collaborating together on inbound freight. That is something you can control and do something about, immediately.

    💰 How expensive is it to work with National Distributors? Here are my real numbers -- Amount Invoiced to KeHE: $32,000. Amount Paid: $21,000. Difference: $11,000. That’s $11,000 in chargebacks, fees, and returned products from retailers. That’s 34% of everything we sold them, meaning we lost all of our profit margin and barely broke even. Suffice it to say, we stopped selling to them because it would put us out of business. Here’s my advice to emerging brands: 👉 I highly recommend working with regional distributors to build your business over the national ones until you’ve reached $5 million in sales. Most retailers have preferred regional distributors that would love to have your business. 👉Don’t let retailers purchase your product without having a marketing plan in place with them. The vast majority of fees ($8,400) came from products Jewel Osco purchased but returned because they didn’t sell the product. Why not? Our buyer left, and we had no contact. We tried calling Jewel HQ dozens of times, e-mailing everyone we could and even tried working through KeHE to get in touch with their team so we could run marketing plans to move the product off the shelf. Nada. No response. Once the returns started coming in we stopped fulfilling orders. 👉Track and Analyze your deductions.     The battle for share of wallet between grocery retail and restaurants is just getting warmed up. This isn’t a new phenomenon, but it has never been more front of mind for the consumer public in the aftermath of post-Covid inflation. Of course this isn’t an all -or- nothing proposition, the best restaurants with compelling experiences are going to thrive. On the whole, the next six months are a huge opportunity for retail grocery to claw back market share of consumer spend from food “away from home”. The retailers that do this won’t necessarily be the ones with the lowest price on commoditized staples. A customer who used to eat at Olive Garden or Red Lobster but has decided to cook at home instead is looking for experience, FUN, and “affordable luxury”.     Interesting ad campaign by Peabody Essex Museum encouraging visitors to “escape the algorithm” and enjoy “Real Life” We’re moving in two very distinct dichotomous directions as a society: 1. Instant gratification, AI generated and AI enhanced content, deepfakes, and convenient delivery of everyting on demand, anytime, anywhere. 2. A yearning for tactile, analog experiences. Vinyl hi-fi bars, museums, gatherings, and offline interactions that cut into the ubiquitous anxiety of post-pandemic life in the 20’s. Food is the common demominator across both of these divergent paths. There will be an ever-increasing market penetration of online grocery sales YoY…but more and more people will also be looking for real home cooked meals to “escape the algorithm”.
