Many of the improvements part of our Secondary Treatment Expansion Program (STEP) — the large improvement project at the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment plant since the 1970s — are beginning to take shape. Highlights include two new, larger clarifiers to increase biological treatment capacity, a new biosolids processing facility with more effective extraction technologies, and new multi-use buildings and storage areas - all designed with sustainability of construction and operation in mind. STEP increases the capacity, resilience, and efficiency of the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant, advancing our mission to protect public health and the environment.

To minimize traffic delays for the 47 truckloads of concrete, 15 craft workers, including four apprentices, began work at 3:30 AM this past Monday. A total of 465 cubic yards of concrete was poured for one of the final large concrete slabs for the Secondary Treatment Expansion Program (STEP) - the largest improvement project at the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant since the 1970s. This pour was for our new SOLO (Solids Handling Load Out) facility. SOLO will replace the current 'sludge hoppers' and is part of a new biosolids processing complex that will add capacity and operational resiliency at the plant.
