Engaging and inspiring emerging leaders to address the most pressing challenges in their countries.
About us
The Presidential Precinct engages and inspires emerging leaders to address the most pressing challenges in their countries. We seek to draw out the best from these leaders through professional fellowships, leadership exchanges, global forums, and virtual resources with six primary areas of focus: women’s empowerment, economic opportunity, good governance, human rights and justice, cultural heritage, and civic engagement. Over 1,300 leaders from more than 162 countries have joined the Presidential Precinct’s programs and returned home to invest their knowledge, expertise, and networks to transform the lives of millions worldwide. The Precinct sits at the center of a four-member consortium, consisting of two premier universities – the University of Virginia and William & Mary – and two internationally renowned historic sites – James Madison’s Montpelier and James Monroe’s Highland. Close relationships with Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the U.S. Department of State, and communities around Virginia help to complete our strategic network for empowering communities globally.

Chiedza Mlingwa reflects on her time at the Presidential Precinct during #YALI2024: "Previously, I never thought of myself as a leader but the Mandela Washington Fellowship made me start seeing myself as one." Apply for the 2025 Fellowship before September 10: https://lnkd.in/gRiEMct

“It is not what they call you, it is what you answer to" - W.C. Fields A little over a month ago, I answered an invitation to be part of a special episode of The Book Series proudly powered by Global South Opportunities In this interview, I highlight how: Previously, I never thought of myself as a leader but the Mandela Washington Fellowship made me start seeing myself as one. And how being at The Presidential Precinct made me realize how there's so much more to and in a name. The name Presidential Precinct relates to, or is befitting of being held to the highest standard of excellence and integrity, of the utmost prestige and authority. In this interview, I reflect on what it means to me to live up to my name which directly translates to “being the light" and how I choose, henceforth, to let my light so shine by inspiring others to do more, be more and become more. Thank you, once again, to Anotida Chikumbu for the platform and for the opportunity.

"Our classes taught us the power of political imagination and that truly, any meaningful kind of positive change is first imagined and envisioned. I also learned the power of modeling authenticity as a leader and the power of human experiences in fostering and creating connectivity between different societal groups." On our graduation day, the Presidential Precinct provided each of us Fellows with an incredible opportunity—a one-on-one conversation with Senator Tim Kaine. For those who may not know, Senator Kaine was the vice-presidential candidate alongside Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her presidential run. In this picture, I’m sharing with him the work I’ve been doing in Nigeria, focusing on fostering gender equality and inclusive governance. As I outlined my efforts over the past eight-plus years, Senator Kaine looked at me and said, "You do a lot!" I couldn’t help but smile because, in reality, I had only scratched the surface. The truth is, beyond social media and what we post online, there is so much more happening behind the scenes in the pursuit of justice and equality. This post is a tribute to the young girl serving her NYSC in Ibadan, who felt it was her responsibility to educate young students about civic engagement and raise funds for their education. She probably never imagined that she could come this far. I hope this serves as a reminder and inspiration to you today—keep pushing forward and continue being the light! #PresidentialPrecinct #MWF2024 #YALI2024 #WomeninLeadership #GlobalLeadership

I’m sharing my journey as a 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders in the Civic Engagement track, hoping to inspire others to apply for this program. The Mandela Washington Fellowship brings together young African leaders, from across the continent who are passionate about #civic engagement, #public service, and #business. Fellows are assigned to one of 25 universities and institutions across the United States, and I was fortunate to be placed at the The Presidential Precinct . The Presidential Precinct is an organization that empowers leaders from emerging democracies worldwide. Through connections with the University of Virginia, the College of William & Mary and historical sites like Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Robert H. Smith Center for the Constitution at James Madison's Montpelier , the Presidential Precinct offers a unique platform to explore ideas on democracy, governance, and sustainable development. My experience in the CivicEngagement track at the Presidential Precinct has been transformative, giving me deep insights into governance, politics, and the immense power of civic engagement. Being part of this fellowship has allowed me to join a community of inspiring leaders dedicated to making a difference. The discussions, workshops, and connections I’ve gained have been incredibly valuable, strengthening my commitment to creating meaningful change. To everyone in the public sector, civil society, and entrepreneurial fields. Don’t miss your chance to apply for the Mandela Washington Fellowship 2025. The application opens on August 13, and it’s an opportunity you won’t want to miss. This program offers outstanding knowledge, networks, and opportunities to make a real impact in your community and beyond. If you’re thinking about applying, reach out!
