Tens of thousands of Californians turned out last Saturday to take part in the 40th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. Participants scoured more than 750 cleanup sites, removing hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash before it could be washed out to sea during the rainy season. A group of Presidio volunteers gathered to pick up garbage at Quartermaster Reach Marsh. This area is extraordinary habitat for native plants and wildlife and a beautiful place to experience nature and Golden Gate views. It’s also extremely vulnerable as it sits right under Highway 101 with motorists intentionally and unintentionally littering harmful trash that wildlife can ingest and pollutes the marsh waters that lead to the Bay. Volunteers that day picked up 27 lbs of trash between Quartermaster Marsh and the Pet Cemetery. Across the whole Golden Gate National Recreation Area, 440 volunteers participated in Coastal Cleanup day. And a total of 1257 pounds of trash were removed from the beaches and waterways. Thank you to our volunteers! Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, spend time in nature, and give back to this beautiful national park site. https://bit.ly/3ZQhGnv

The Presidio is where San Francisco began — a place that preserves and shares the layered and complex history of our nation. Today marks the 248th anniversary of Spanish colonists establishing El Presidio of San Francisco, a military post to guard the bay from other European powers and protect the nearby Mission San Francisco de Asís (also known as Mission Dolores). This was following thousands of years as the traditional territory of the Yelamu, a local tribe of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples of the San Francisco Peninsula. During your next visit to the park, stop by Pershing Square to see the historic foundations of the original fort. Across the street is the park’s oldest building – the Presidio Officers’ Club where free exhibitions at the Heritage Gallery trace the history of the Presidio.
