Last month, government practitioners from the Dominican Republic participated in an activity facilitated by our friends at the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). The activity allowed them to step into a vendor's shoes by building paper airplanes in response to two different RFPs: one that is well-designed and outcome-driven, and one that is compliance-oriented and tough to respond to. Meet the people behind PEN: a sense of collaborative community-building is what drew Project Leader Isabel Garcia to procurement.

Our team was so excited to be invited to speak at the National League of Cities City Inclusive Entrepreneurship Speaker Series! In this virtual event on Unlocking Economic Opportunity through Procurement, Isabel Garcia and Damonique Sonnier will share an array of strategies you can use to diversify your vendor pool and work in collaboration with policymakers and entrepreneurship supporters to make procurement processes more accessible and fair. Our team recently had the chance to connect in person with a procurement delegation from Ecuador. In a discussion facilitated by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), our team shared common procurement challenges and innovations related to process efficiency and digitization. In turn, the Ecuador delegation highlighted their recent focus on modernizing procurement systems, while staying compliant with ever-changing regulatory requirements. We look forward to continuing to connect with procurement innovators outside the U.S., as the principles of procurement excellence transcend differences in nationality, governance, and local geography!

We’re thrilled to welcome our newest colleague to the Procurement Excellence Network team at the Government Performance Lab: Evan Matthew Karl joins us most recently from the Office of the Mayor in New York, NY, where he worked on several projects, including a citywide food distribution program targeting homebound seniors throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Procurement rules limited the city’s ability to partner with small, informal volunteer collectives best positioned to respond to the crisis,” he notes, an insight which sparked his interest in procurement innovation and led him to join PEN.
