Providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable in our Bay Area community.

About us

Project Open Hand’s mission is to improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable, caring for and educating our community. Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers. Every day, thousands of people in the Bay Area are battling serious, life-threatening illnesses. And every day, Project Open Hand is there for them – providing healthy, nourishing meals with love. Accessing healthy food is critical for people who are too sick or frail to shop and cook for themselves. We also provide hot, nutritious meals for seniors to help them tackle the health challenges of old age. Good nutrition enables our clients to better manage the symptoms of disease, mitigate the side effects of treatment, and can speed recovery. Our registered dietitian supports and counsels our clients to help them feel better by eating right. In addition to providing life-sustaining food to our clients, Project Open Hand nourishes our entire community by engaging thousands of volunteers and donors, as well as dozens of local companies, in the important work of feeding neighbors in need.

Spice alert! Thanks to a recent donation of spices from Spiceable, we were able to include some great flavors in our grocery boxes this week. Our grocery box this week features organic heirloom tomatoes and eggplant from our USDA GusNIP partners at Oya Organics. Clients are receiving recipes for a simple curry to incorporate into their meals this week. Using a variety of spices in meal prep is so important to what we do because they decrease the need for salt (which is important in many health-related diets) while enhancing the flavor of foods. They also contain polyphenols, which have important antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in concentrated levels. Other spices, like cinnamon, is also associated with better blood sugar control. Thank you to Spiceable for your generous donation for helping us to provide quality nutrition to our clients. #GusNIP #Organic #Spices #mealswithlove

It’s Malnutrition Awareness Week! Registered Dietitians and public health professionals play a key role in identifying, preventing, and addressing malnutrition across sectors of care. At Project Open Hand we provide essential nutrition services to at-risk populations such as older adults and adults with chronic illnesses to do just that. Here’s how we do it: 1. Congregate Meal Program: Project Open Hand partners with the SF Department of Aging and Adult Services to provide nutritious meals to older adults and adults living with disabilities in San Francisco. 2. Medically Tailored Meals and Groceries: Having access to nutritious meals and groceries is an essential component of managing chronic, nutrition-related diseases. 3. Proud to have participated in Walk the World with Informa alongside my Informa Tech and NetLine colleagues! We had the opportunity to explore the neighborhoods of San Francisco while raising funds for Project Open Hand, an incredible organization dedicated to supporting individuals at risk of food scarcity. A huge thank you to Informa for organizing this meaningful event and providing us with an opportunity to give back to our community. It was wonderful connecting with colleagues in person, all while making a positive impact. Even though the walk concluded, I'm still collecting donations for Project Open Hand. Please consider donating here- https://lnkd.in/gd9FWHFv Special thanks Michelle C. Lim, Anthony Lim, Arul P., Daniel R., and Stephanie Dale for the fun and laughs along the route!
