IBM Fellow and VP of IBM Quantum

Today I’m excited to share a few milestones. First, Qiskit has proven to be the most performant software development kit for building and transpiling quantum circuits, based on the results of over 1,000 benchmarking tests. These tests were developed by leading universities, national labs, and IBM, released in an open-source package and a paper today via the arXiv (https://lnkd.in/e98wniXY), where Qiskit was compared to other leading quantum software SDKs: BQSKit, Braket, Cirq, Staq, and TKET. These have been released as part of an open-source package named Benchpress to enable the Quantum Industry to confirm and expand upon this analysis in order to provide meaningful comparisons between quantum SDKs (https://lnkd.in/eWTVuThh). In our testing, Qiskit successfully completed the most tests and transpiled circuits with the best combination of speed and number of gates. Its was the only software that was able to complete all of the tests that were possible for it to complete. We’ve always said that we need extremely powerful and performant software to match the scaling of our quantum hardware, and I believe the results released today show we’re on the correct path—being able to deliver both to our users. Second, today during IEEE Quantum Week, I shared the first look at the Qiskit Functions Catalog—a platform for third parties to offer quantum software that is directly integrated into our platform to make it more accessible and more efficient to use. The Qiskit Functions Catalog is now available in preview to our Premium Plan Users. Startups Algorithmiq, Q-CTRL, QEDMA, and QunaSys are the first to offer functions on the Qiskit Functions Catalog (https://lnkd.in/eWCNrsuY). Paired with the performance of Qiskit and utility-scale quantum hardware, it is our hope that Qiskit Functions will accelerate algorithm and application discovery. It is my goal that quantum developers and other third parties continue to develop their own additions to the Qiskit Functions Catalog, which in turn will aid the discovery of new algoirthms and domain-specific use cases across many industries. I look forward to see how our users and partners are able to leverage the unparalleled performance and speed Qiskit coupled with the novel quantum software of our partners to unlock quantum advantage. 🚀🚀🚀Super exciting news announced at Q2B Tokyo! 🚀🚀🚀 QEDMA is concluding an exciting (and incredibly hot!) week at Q2B Tokyo. QEDMA and RIKEN revealed their unique collaboration, joining forces between Qedma's error mitigation software (QESEM) and RIKEN's cutting-edge classical simulations of quantum systems, powered by the Fugaku supercomputer. Qedma and RIKEN demonstrated the first-of-its-kind optimized hybrid execution of quantum circuits. In this demonstration, the workload was split between IBM Eagle and Heron QPUs, with error-free results delivered using QESEM, and a classical simulation using RIKEN's cutting-edge tensor network methods for simulating quantum circuits. This exciting news was announced at Q2B Tokyo in a joint keynote given by Qedma's CTO Netanel Lindner and RIKEN group leader Seiji Yunoki.   The outcomes of this collaboration are amazing, with significant demonstrated speed-ups (more than 20x) in QPU times required to achieve high-accuracy, unbiased results from large-volume quantum circuits. The implications are enormous: by leveraging the rapidly evolving capabilities of quantum computers and the computing power of supercomputers, Qedma and RIKEN are accelerating the timeline for quantum algorithm advantage. 💻 💻 💻 Stay tuned for more results coming from the Qedma-RIKEN collaboration!

We had the pleasure of participating in the IBM Quantum Partner Forum in Milan last week. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear about the latest developments in the field of quantum computing and to meet and discuss with a great community of experts, including the team from IBM, pioneering startups, and purpose-driven quantum teams. Inspiring talks were given by Jay Gambetta and Katie Pizzolato on the amazing achievements and future roadmap of IBM Quantum, reminiscent of the strategies employed by Apple and NVIDIA. QEDMA showcased the latest developments in QESEM, our pioneering Quantum Error Suppression and Error Mitigation product. Qedma’s CTO, Prof. Netanel Lindner, presented large-scale demos run with QESEM on IBM’s Eagle devices, including our latest 1D and 2D full-device Hamiltonian simulation experiments, reaching the largest active volumes obtained to date using an unbiased error-mitigation solution. The demo session also included Michael Biercuk and Matteo Rossi. The rapid progress in the field is stunning. In particular, we’re very excited by IBM’s progress on its hardware platforms and the exciting opportunities that lie in the combination of these platforms with classical supercomputers. Our demonstrations provide evidence that with devices soon to be made available by IBM, QESEM will enable the scaling of error-mitigated quantum computers to exponentially surpass classical simulations. From this point forward, QESEM will give its users access to circuit volumes which are inaccessible with classical computers, and put us in the regime of quantum computational advantage. #QuantumComputing #ibm #quantum
