In this two part webinar series, founders of Grazing School of the West, Brittany "Cole" Bush and Olivia Tincani will dig into the roots of what makes a grazier’s business different. In part one they will discuss business planning, decision-making, and the distinct things to consider while planning your contract or prescribed grazing business. In part two they will review various business tools, templates, and instruments that power operations of grazing businesses and empower their entrepreneurs and employees. "Family. The word means a lot of different things to different people. My family is my husband and our children, my parents, and my big sister and her family. I have amazing aunts and cousins who make my stomach ache from laughter. I have uncles who have guided me and friends who have saved me. I had no idea when I took the position as the Northern Plains Manager that my family would grow quite the way it did.     This is the second year I’ve coordinated the New Agrarian Program (NAP) in Montana, the second year I’ve stood on the sidelines and cheered on the next generation of ranchers. I’ve listened and encouraged, even given advice here and there. I've heard about the hardest days and the most rewarding ones, too. I’ve heard people address challenging times both in ranching and in life in general. I’ve been there when they needed someone to cry to or someone to celebrate with. In similar situations, we might never talk again after the eight-month apprentice is over. But thankfully, it’s not like that in NAP. I’ve run into a handful of 2023 Northern Plains apprentices this summer, and each time, we greet each other with laughter, maybe a squeal (mainly from me), and a great big good-to-see-you hug! I hope they all know the time we’ve spent getting to know each other makes them my family now, too." 🎧 On the latest episode of Down to Earth, hear from Don Boyd, David Johnson, and Hui-Chun Johnson about their restoration project at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. They are working with a small team to restore 38 acres on the refuge that have been degraded by “conventional” agricultural practices and invasive plant species. They have completed the first year of the five-year BEAM project (Biologically Enhanced Agricultural Management) using cover-crops, no-till methods, and compost tea, with the goal of creating more self-sustaining, regenerative agricultural fields that provide food for the many wildlife species on the refuge, water conservation, and a model for regenerative practices for other agrarians in New Mexico and beyond. This Sunday, October 27, is National Mentoring Day! We want to take a moment to recognize our New Agrarian Program mentors, without whom the apprenticeship program wouldn’t be possible. Our program mentors are not only exceptional land and animal stewards, but they take the time to invest in the next generation, even when it means that four-wheelers get stuck in the mud more often, or it takes a little longer to move cattle. We want to share our most sincere THANK YOU to all current and past mentors across five states, over 15 years, and serving over 140 apprentices. You truly do make a difference.
