accelerating better futures 🔮

About us

RADAR is a global community of people thinking about and building better futures. Together, we’ve dreamt up and collaboratively published three crowdfunded reports into the future of culture, run public hackathon and education events for hundreds of people online, built an ideas platform which was recently awarded a grant of over $150k, and shared in the rewards — all in service of accelerating better futures, together. And we’re just getting started. For too long, the future has seemed to belong to the few and the powerful. But we choose to believe there’s a different truth — simple and radical — hidden in plain sight: The future belongs to those who think about it. And in our view, that should include more, and we mean way more of the population than it does today. In fact, we believe it so much, we co-wrote a whole book about it (see: The Curious Human's Field Guide to the Future).

RADAR is about to have a really big fall — which is why we’ve been a bit quiet here. But to close out summer, we gathered for an end-of-August Town Hall to share all sorts of updates and, most importantly, celebrate the progress of our first round of micro.grant projects. ICYMI, in our first round, we collectively awarded small sums of money and the support of the community to 7 projects: including a 9-year-old (RADAR’s youngest honorary member, and Caitlin Keeley's son) who felt called to enroll his neighborhood friends in thinking about the future; a reimagining of panel events from Jordan Nerison, serendipitously sprouted right here on this app; and multiple projects (Mapping Rural Futures by Mathilde Magada Cahill and Fortune Tellus by purvisha S. and Molly Simpson) born of university imaginings and meanderings that are too often snuffed out upon entry into the ‘real world’, among others. But perhaps most powerfully of all, we were honored to support ‘Songs for the Future’, a project by Nigerian artist and activist Benny Ats who, through his recently-launched album and soon-to-debut school tour, aims to empower youth across Nigeria, and ultimately across the continent, through educational art and interactive quizzes whose results fund hard-to-afford university applications. We sat together and listened in amazement that the RADAR vision and community could find its way to Benny and inspire such beautiful art, and now we're thrilled to share it with you, too — in the playlist linked in the comments. The art is, as ever, by the talented and prolific domingob .⌐◨-◨ and was inspired by our favorite lyric in the poem written by Benny and his co-writer, the poem's vocalist Nenye: Strange, they say. You can touch the future but not reshape its clay. Here's to reshaping the clay ✨

On September 22nd and 23rd, the United Nations will convene The Summit of the Future, bringing world leaders together to forge international consensus around its Pact for the Future. In their words, it’s “a once-in-a-generation opportunity for change.” In support of this vision and objectives, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑫𝒂𝒚𝒔 will bring together representatives from Member States, civil society, private sector, academia, local and regional authorities, youth, and many more in the days leading up to the Summit. RADAR is thrilled (and frankly a little wonderstruck) to be sending two of its core team members, Keely Adler and Caitlin Keeley to the Action Days to participate in events covering digital and technology, peace and security, and sustainable development and financing. But most of all, eager to engage in the dedicated focus on future generations — and how we cultivate conversation and action that genuinely serves them and their futures that hang in the balance. As part of our participation, we’ll also be hanging out at the 𝑩𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝑭𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 organized and hosted by School of International Futures (SOIF) and Futures Friends. This official side event is all about building momentum and driving action around the Summit and, in particular, the Declaration on Future Generations agenda. Caitlin and Keely will be on the main plenary (which will also be live-streamed virtually) sharing the story of RADAR and our vision of Radical Collaboration for Hopeful Futures. Which is of course to say, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝑨𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝑰𝒕. (If you’ve RSVPed to attend already, you can also catch Keely as part of the Future Friends 333 event that kicks off the day in-person, where we may or may not have a lil RADAR magic up our sleeves by way of Signal Bingo & some fun prizes.) if you've been following along, you'll recall that we've just recently kicked off our latest cycle on A Future in Love — three months of exploration, imagination, and speculation culminating in an open-to-the-public virtual Lovefest that we can't wait to throw. as Jay Matthews put it, A Future in Love is calling us to build the house that love will live in. and so, after two weeks of exploring far and wide, we're taking the next two weeks to dive deep down more tightly defined rabbit holes that will help us unpack what needs to change, what systems we need to rebuild, and what stories we need to tell if we’re going to bring this future to life. and if that wasn't exciting enough, we're living the love and inviting members of the community to invite a +1 to participate in the rest of the cycle — whether it's a friend, loved one, colleague, or anyone else who has something special to add to this exploration of love. so, we thought we'd do the same here. comment below with why *you* want to help cultivate this better future with us, and if we're feeling the love, we'll reach out with a +1 invite all your own. (note: the +1 role won't give you full access to the RADAR community; you'll still need to apply for that. but it will be a wonderful entry point if that's what you've been looking for!)

so, who's the keeper of LinkedIn etiquette when it comes to all things SXSW and SXSW EDU panelpicker? because obviously, it's *a lot* right now. but also, as Miguel Jiménez pointed out, it's kind of beautiful (and also kind of disorienting?) to see just how much the futures and foresight community is showing up and being embraced in spaces like this? and so, of course, we want you to keep voting for our panel! and our friends' panels! like Sarah Owen and Jasmine Bina and Frank W. Spencer IV and jennifer m. chang 🍉 and Joanna Lepore and a bunch of others we're sure we missed! but....idk, someone tell us what we're doing here. shall we all make a pact to vote for one another and move on to more interesting and less repetitive topics? *𝒖𝒑𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆* 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈? 𝒕𝒂𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒆'𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒓𝒐𝒑 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒌! 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒓! 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒕!  #SXSW #SXSWEDU #SXSW2025 #PANELPICKER #VOTE #WHATIFWEALLWON?

💡 What if the antidote to apathy and anxiety is agency?    🌱 And one of the greatest gifts we can give the next generation is belief in what’s possible?   💪 Not shiny, happy, saccharine optimism, but potent, powerful, action-driving hope.   🤔 How might we cultivate that in young people? In all of us?   𝑨𝒕 𝑹𝑨𝑫𝑨𝑹, 𝒘𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒔𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆, 𝒚𝒆𝒕 𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒑𝒉𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒆: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒕.    Because when we allow ourselves to imagine the future, we quickly recognize our ability to shape it. And when we do it in multiplayer mode? We’re unstoppable.   Nowhere is this belief more packed with potential than among our youth; and sadly, nowhere is it more easily stamped out in today’s world. ✏️ 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒘𝒆’𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒐 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒑𝒕 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝑯𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏’𝒔 𝑭𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝑮𝒖𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆. 🧑🏫 Ever since we pressed publish, people have asked us for the kids’ version, the syllabus, the classroom curriculum. And so, we’re doing it! Well, as long as you help us get to SXSW EDU 2025 so we can share it with the curious educators, forward-thinking curriculum developers, and education visionaries who will gather in Austin next March. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gq5ybhQU In the workshop we’ve proposed, we’ll introduce participants to our 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘍𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 — a collection of tools and hands-on exercises that can seamlessly integrate into the classroom, creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment that prepares students to become proactive, imaginative, and hopeful citizens of the future. Because that’s what it’s all about. We truly believe that the future belongs to those who think about it — so where better to begin than with the next generation? Vote for us! Send Keely Adler and Caitlin Keeley to #SXSWEDU 2025! Help us cultivate the next generation of citizens of the future 🌱✨ #SXSW #SXSWEDU #SXSW2025 #SXSWEDU2025 #VOTE #PANELPICKER #EDUCATION #CURRICULUM #FUTURES #HOPE #NEXTGEN

I guess you can call it our ✨experimentation era✨, but we’re just feeling particularly passionate about the idea that the future belongs to those who think about it these days, and we're following that passion where it leads. Most recently, it’s led us to reconfigure these last few months of 2024 into something that’s not just a campfire, nor quite a cycle, but rather a collective focus for us to embark on together that feels right for the times and ripe for our community. 𝓐𝓷𝓭 𝓼𝓸, 𝓯𝓸𝓻 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓷𝓮𝔁𝓽 3 𝓶𝓸𝓷𝓽𝓱𝓼, 𝔀𝓮’𝓵𝓵 𝓫𝓮 𝓪𝓼𝓴𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓸𝓾𝓻𝓼𝓮𝓵𝓿𝓮𝓼: 𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓲𝓯 𝔀𝓮 𝓵𝓲𝓿𝓮𝓭 𝓲𝓷 𝓪 𝔀𝓸𝓻𝓵𝓭 𝓽𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓵𝓮𝓭 𝔀𝓲𝓽𝓱 𝓵𝓸𝓿𝓮? We kick off tomorrow, August 6, at 10am ET/4pm CET in the Events channel on the server. Come think about a more loving world with us. And if you’re not a member yet but this strikes a chord, now’s a perfect time to join us 💕 More info at the newsletter linked in the post comments.

In which we gathered to peel back the curtain of how our products, services, and environments have been designed (or not!) for feelings; considered how our time on the electronic frontier affects our human meatsuits; played with tools for shaping the emotional resonance of our feelings frequencies; and imagined a 2034 where our world is designed for feelings — by people armed with good intentions and the tools we discussed throughout the session. (If you're so inclined, you can check out and contribute to the worldboard, linked in the video description). (You'll have to excuse the minor chaos of our encountering an unmutable ghost in the machine? And all that comes with breakout rooms? But hey, it'll be like you were there!) Thanks to Shuya Gong and Olivia Vagelos for sharing some of their time, energy, and beautiful brains with the RADAR community and a few more of our friends. We'll be reflecting on this one for a while. In a cedar hot tub, perhaps? https://lnkd.in/g4vdjzKj

What is the experience of anticipatory grief? Or synthetic nostalgia? How might we design for emotional motion or feelings fatigue? These are the kinds of questions we'll be asking and exploring when we gather for our next Event with Friends ft. Shuya Gong and Olivia Vagelos. It's going to be a trip. We imagine it might feel like some of the images below? (But if you wanna find out in real time, hit the link in the comments to snag your spot 💖)
